Advantages: Low calories
Disadvantages: Not as good as ice cream and creates problems!
I love a bargain! I'd got a voucher for 50pence off The Skinny Cow chocolate fudge sticks, so whilst hunting in Tesco's freezers for some ice cream cones I spotted these and thought good I can save 50pence and be good to my waistline at the same time.
The Box
**********
Quite eye catching as it has a huge chocolate coloured lolly/ice cream on the front of the box and a reclining Freisan type cow with sexy red lips and a tape measure attractively wound around a very neat waist. Farmers wouldn't want such anorexic looking cattle, but then we want diminutive waists , don't we?!
My box had a large yellow band with red lettering, stating 50% extra free! Wow! What a great bargain I thought. There is also less than 1% fat which it states again on the front of the box typically 73 calories per stick.
So I must be dim ! Am I going to eat the stick and get 73 calories? No way.
The Contents
***************
Now I realise why it is a "stick", the contents, six in my box 4 normally, sealed in a papery wrapper can't be described as an ice cream, It can't be described as an ice lolly. it is an iced dessert on a stick.
It was a chocolate coloured mush on a stick - hence the stick name on the front.
The Flavour
*************
Chocolate, yes. But never once did I find a hint of fudge. It is called chocolate fudge, but it just seemed like watery frozen chocolate to me.
The Consistency
*******************
Frozen watery chocolate mixture, which quickly melted and dripped and broke off all down my white top and left a yukky mark. I can eat an ice cream quite quickly and lick and suck and avoid wasting any of it! I wasn't successful with this "Stick" and admit wasn't bothered that some fell off, although I would have preferred it not to have landed on me!
The Ingredients
******************
There is skimmed milk, sugar, glucose syrup, cocoa powder and fat reduced cocoa powder. There are emulsifiers and stablisers. That was where I became woried! Locust Bean Gum, Guar Gum and carrageen.
I remembered a long time ago on an Esther Rantzen programme about Slimming foods and using gums. It created bloated wind problems in a lot of people. Too late I'd eaten it!
Nutrition
**********
Very low in fat just 0.5g in a stick, and 73 calories. 2.8g protein so not much benefit there.! 1.7g of fibre about the same as eating an apple and 0.04g salt.
Web site
**********
To check out more try the website on ;- www.skinnycow.co.uk . There is another flavour called very Berry, perhaps that would have been nicer.
The Verdict
*************
I haven't bought them again and I won't be either even if I have another 50p off. To me it was a waste of the other £1.49
as the total cost was £1.99 which originally I thought was good value as I was getting 6 sticks.
I was a "silly cow" thinking I could be a "skinny cow ", in future I'll stick to something with more flavour and just go for a long walk to burn off the calories! And I wouldn't have been left with a rather indelicate problem either! No more guar gum for me thank you!
Summary: Not really ice cream, poor taste, although low in calories.
