Advantages: very tasty and low in calories
Disadvantages: none!
Amazingly, we have been having a spell of very hot weather lately and as a consequence my thoughts have turned towards ice cream. As I have really been making a concerted effort to lose some weight and gain a trimmer figure though I thought I would have to be very strong willed and resist the temptation - that is until I spotted these Skinny Cow Triple Chocolate sticks in the freezer compartments in Sainsburys!
I had been aware of the Skinny Cow products for a while, and I still can't decide whether I love or hate the name! However, my eyes were drawn to these because I saw a big 87 on the box and that was referring to the number of calories contained in each one. Well, I have to say that I became quite excited by that especially as that is less calories than my normal healthy yoghurt! There is also less than 3% fat contained in each one so they were doing really well on both fronts!
Let me say a little more about the packaging. All the Skinny Cow products come in very distinctive black and white boxes designed to look like a cow's hide! The thing that you can't fail to notice is the picture of the very skinny cow with a tape measure around it's waist. There's a lot of excess on that tape measure too which just by itself is quite persuasive. There's also a picture of the sticks themselves and they do look seriously tempting. Added to this there's a little piece of text saying - Deliciously indulgent chocolate sticks swirled with chocolate sauce and chocolate pieces! It all sounded just too good to be true so it was bound to taste horrible.....
There are three sticks in the packet so my husband and I had one each and there is still one left to be fought over! (I do hate these packets of three especially as we are not an odd numbered family!). Neither of us was expecting much but as soon as we opened them up we both said how nice they looked. It's basically chocolate iced dessert on a stick but you also see the swirly sauce and the little chocolate pieces.
But of course, the most important thing is what they taste like and these - tasted absolutely delicious. I couldn't believe that I was eating something that was so low in clories and fat because it tasted as good as full fat ice cream. The chocolate was not weak at all and the combination of iced dessert, sauce and chocolate bits worked ever so well. The texture was also very interesting with the addition of the chocolate bits. Overall I loved it and I really wanted to savour every mouthful. The real test was what my husband thought of it though as he really is not a fan of low fat foods but he really thought it was great too! I guess we'll be fighting over that last one after all!
There are couple more things to mention - one good and one not so good! The good thing is that there are no artificial flavours or colours but alas there is 12.8 grams sugars which is 14% of the adult guideline daily amount. Therefore even with the low calories and fats you would not want to eat too many of these!
I bought this three pack from Sainsburys where usually it would cost £1.99 but I bought them on offer for £1.32 meaning that there was a third off! I thought this was pretty good value but as they were so tasty I probably would be tempted to buy them at full price!
I would definitely recommend them.
Summary: A great treat for when you are watching your weight!

Cheryld - 25/09/08 I love the 'cookies and cream' ones but haven't seen them around for a while.
