Advantages: low fat tasty snack

Disadvantages: bits stick in your teeth

Actually I usually run down to my local Farmfoods for a 12 pack of these corn snacks as they sell them for £1 there compared to the usual price of around £1.50 from other supermarkets.

Skips are part of the KP Range which is in turn part of the bigger United Biscuits corporation. Of course KP have been well known producers of snacks including their famous nuts which have been around for over 50 years. This makes Skips a baby really who have only been around for just over 30 years although I guess any snack who lasts that long in times such as these where we are bombarded with new types of snacks every couple of weeks, has to have something going for it. They are available not only in this Prawn Cocktail flavour but in Sizzling Bacon and Utterly Cheesy varieties too although I haven't personally tasted these are they are quite difficult to find.

This product was re-launched in January of this year to highlight changes to it and each foil packet is highly distinguishable by it's bright yellow front with the Pink in your face Skips logo across the front. They also have a blue and white corner stating 'New Best Ever' but then don't most products these days who have been around for as long as this one. It is good to know that they are trying to improve things and in this case it's all to do with the Skips Promise which states that there are no MSG (that is monosodium glutamate, a flavour enhancer used in many products which is also claimed to be a drug which in makes your brain think that the food you are eating is tastier than what it actually is - all sorts of health problems have been associated with this and if you are concerned or want to read more about this the website about it is www.nomsg.com), they are lower in sodium, they are gluten free and start cheering all you people watching your weight as there are less than 100 calories per pack. This is great news as far as many of us are concerned and in fact at 89 calories a bag this is a good value snack all round. The fat content is 5.1g which is much lower than the usual bag of crisps which generally contains around 9g and the sodium level is 0.2g per bag.

Each skip is pentagonal shaped and has what looks like veins running from the centre outwards which makes them a very easy to recognise snack if they are set out at parties. They are approximately an inch in diameter so they are very easy to pop into your mouth without having to take a bite first and get crumbs everywhere as you do with normal crisps (well unless you have a big mouth that is lol). When you do pop it in your mouth it's more fun to set it on your tongue to experience a fizzy sort of sensation before feeling it melt slowly than to crunch into it. This way you can really savour the flavour. It also leaves your tongue with a strange tingling feeling which I haven't experienced with any other snack of this kind. The smell of these snacks are also very appealing and there is no nasty aftertaste as with some of the cheaper own brand varieties of these snacks.

I specifically remember the set of ads featuring the tongue and nose characters pictured below going crazy as they each get to sample this product. It made me laugh so much as it was so true to the flavour sensation you get.

Now I generally buy this product more as a snack for my son than for me - he loves them as an occasional treat and it's always funny to watch his reaction as he tastes each one. No matter how often he tries them there is always that initial surprised look on his face as the fizzing feeling starts. He does however prefer to crunch his way through these though as he hasn't developed the sense of savouring yet or is that just a male thing in general - please feel free to comment on this as I would be very interested to know. A study should be perhaps be done to determine this.

A fun part to these snacks is on the back of the pack where you can find various ways to pass the time while either eating these alone or sharing with friends. These are silly little games or tricks you can try out such as getting your friend to read out 'Its all about the the fizz-melt fun'. You can then laugh at them when they miss out the 2nd 'the' in the sentence. Another is a game where you each count upwards from 1 changing every number divisible by 3 to 'fizz' and every number divisible by 5 to 'melt', so it would be 1,2,fizz, 4, melt, fizz, 7,8,fizz, melt etc. Not as easy as it sounds. Every time you get a fizz or a melt in the right place you get a skip. Not an essential part to enjoying this snack but fun all the same.

There is very little more I can add to this review without babbling so all I'll say is that if you like prawn cocktail flavoured crisps but want to reduce your calories or just want a sizzling sensation when you eat something then give these a go.

Summary: good value, tasty and fun to eat.
