I always buy the same crisps Quavers, Quavers and more Quavers so whilst in Sainsburys the other day I decided to buy something different and I chose Skips as I hadn't had them for a while.
Skips come in a bright yellow packet with pinky red writing on it telling us that these are Skips - Prawn Cocktail flavour. Although you can purchase other flavours in multibags I tend not too as I don't find them that nice to be honest. The front of the packet is quite busy giving us quite a bit of information. We are told that these are a fizzy melty snack. They also have 50% less saturated fat .. yet have the same great taste. It also provides us with the skips promise which is;
Skips have no artificial colours or flavours.
They are less than 100 calories per pack.
They contain no MSG.
Phew I can breathe now that's quite alot going on just on the front of the packet.
Less than 100calories per pack though? That sounded good .. almost too good so I checked the nutritional info just to confirm this.
Each bag contains;
89 calories
1.4g sugars
5.0g fat of which 0.5g saturates
Upon opening the bag you are not instantly hit with any aroma at all, instead I have to burrow my nose within the pack slightly and have a good sniff of the whiff ... they have a slightly fishy yet sweet smell - nothing like prawns mind you, nor seafood sauce for that matter. So when you think about it they smell nothing like prawn cocktail? Well they are only crisps afterall.
Each crisp is a pale colour, shaped in a flowery circle almost, they look like they have petals around them. Oh so pretty!
They are quite tasty and I find they are sweet with a slight tang afterwards. The flavour varies from crisp to crisp some being weaker and blander than others. For a fish crisp they dont have that fishy stench which is so hard to rid from your fingers, breath and house they are actually quite pleasant to the tastebuds as well as the nostrils and don't leave a horrid stink wafting about the place.
Do they melt and do they fizz though as apparently remember these are fizzy, melty snacks? Well yes they do melt and wither on your tongue as soon as they enter that big black hole we all like to call our mouths. Fizzing though? Well no I don't recall any fizzing, I can feel them melting and quickly turning into messy slush on the tip of my tongue but there really is no fizzing. I don't think I'd appreciate a crisp fizzing in my mouth though to be honest so it's a good job that wasn't the main appealing factor for me lol!
I have to say though these are some of the only crisps I have bought recently which actually have a full bag of crisps - yet they feel so light. Well each crisp is quite light to eat too and I find it just a bit too easy to wolf down more than one bag.
Overall I'd describe these as melting - not so fizzy - pleasant snacks. With some crisps the flavour is intense and strong these are tasty don't get me wrong but they are just pleasantly tasty rather than packed full of flavour. They are nice to eat but nothing special, I would buy them again especially as they are low in calories and my boys have had no troubles eating them as they melt in their mouths so no choking hazards but they are not a must have in my kitchen cupboards thats for sure.
