Advantages: 99 Calories

Disadvantages: Not that great

As part of the ongoing quest to loose some weight I have been sampling the snacks made by Slimfast. Each one of the snacks has less than 100 calories making them the ideal choice if you just need to have a nibble.

I get cravings for chocolate, (especially around *that* time of the month), and so I thought I would try this to see if it would indeed satisfy those cravings.

The Slimfast Caramel bars are like squished Mars bars. They have nougat, caramel and chocolate but they are a lot smaller, a lot thinner and somehow more dense. They taste similar to a Mars bar but a lot sweeter, (which is saying something as I find Mars Bars sweet enough), and it is a strange sweetness that hangs around for ages after eating. As I have mentioned they are very dense which makes them very chewy and claggy in your mouth, inevitably coating the top of your mouth with goo.

The bars go soft very quickly at room temperature but if you refrigerate them they go rock hard and are unbearably chewy so I don't really know where to store them to keep them at the right temperature.

The packaging is distinctively Slimfast being white and red and featuring the logo of the company. There is one of those helpful bars that tell you the amount of sugar, calories, fat etc on the front too.

Don't be fooled into thinking that low calorie means healthy, it really doesn't and these bars prove it as they contain only 99 calories but also 18.1g of Carbohydrates of which 13.6g is from Sugars and 3.2g of Fat with 1.8g of that being saturated. It may be better than a Mars Bar but it is fraction of the size, (26g), and for such a small bar it's actually a lot.

The 'chocolate' is actually chocolate coating too which as most of you will agree is a poor substitute for the real thing but who expects all the flavour of the real thing with only 99 calories?

All in all these aren't bad but they're not good either and at 38p each they don't represent good value in my opinion. I think I'll stick to the Heroes or Celebrations as a quick chocolaty fix, much smaller but so much more satisfying.

Summary: Made by Slimfast

A little of the real thing always seems a better bet than more of a poor substiture. Good review 8^)
