Advantages: Colourful, lots of fun, Colours your tongue

Disadvantages: Sugariffic!

Nestle Smarties are a fun chocolate that come in a tube, they are a treat for both young and old as they come in many fun colours!

Look
I always used to remember Smarties coming in cylindrical tubes but now they have changed that, which is a shame as it makes them slightly less nostalgic. The new Smarties tube is hexagonal and modern looking on the front of the tube you have the Smarties lettering which is written in a fun font which looks like it has been just slapped on to the pack. The font is outlined with a brown colour, I suppose to represent the all the chocolatey-ness! The rest of the pack is the traditional Smarties blue and covered in pictures of the coloured discs that are the Smarties themselves. You also have a white box on the top which says No artificial colours, which is always good to know. Spinning the tube around will reveal the nutritional information and ingredients that you would expect. Overall a pretty fun tube, it definitely stands out on the shelves with its bright and colourful design. If you have kids with you they will no doubt spot them and force you to buy them (which is fine as long as they give you a couple)!

The Chocolate
Once you open your tube you will be greeted by lots of little coloured discs, from red, orange, green, purple all your favourites are here and you will no doubt have some fun eating your favourite colour first! I had a bit of a sniff but they don't really smell because they are wrapped in a sugary shell layer. Once you pop a Smartie into your mouth you will notice it has a crisp outer shell which when you bite down will pop with a satisfying crunch, the milk chocolate, which is smooth and sweet, inside will then melt on your tongue which is really satisfying. If you don't have time to savour your Smarties, the tube design is great and you can just tip them all back into your mouth (I have done this on occasions lol) but I recommend you eat them at a slower pace as you will enjoy them a lot more and won't choke! Another really fun thing about Smarties are they will colour your tongue, if you are easily amused or are under 10 years old this will no doubt encourage you to buy them! The small size of the Smartie brings up a bit of an issue as you might be able to possibly choke on them so I wouldn't recommend them to small children.

Nutritional Stuff
If you're expecting Smarties to be low in sugar and great for helping you slim down you're probably being a tad optimistic! In a 40gram tube of Smarties you get, 184kcal of energy, 1.6 grams of protein, 29.4grams of carbohydrate with a massive 27.3 grams of that being sugar, 6.7 grams of fat with 4.3 of that being saturated fat, 0.3 grams of fibre and trace amounts of sodium. The sugar content here is insane as nearly two thirds of the pack is just sugar!

Price & Conclusion
Smarties are a really fun chocolatey treat and a tube can be yours for around 50p. If you don't want to just gobble your Smarties you can use them in home baking to decorate cakes and if you add them to vanilla ice cream they are also delicious. Overall Smarties are a great fun, have an interesting new box design, lots of different colours for you to enjoy, colour your tongue but they do have an awful lot of sugar in them so you will get a bit of a sugar rush and they may send kids into a sugar fuelled frenzy, they are also a bit small and small children may choke on them. 4/5

Summary: A tastey chocolate treat that is loaded with sugar.

My mum used to empty the tube and take out all the blue smarties because they made me hyper - not sure if there actually were any extra E numbers in the blue ones or if my mum was just having a paranoid moment!
