Advantages: Nice sweet

Disadvantages: none

The rather splendid Easter egg which I was presented with, was of the Nestle Smartie variety, and in being so it was therefore filled with two of the new funky shaped packets of Smarties. It had been a while since my taste buds had been tingled by the small crispy beans of chocolate, and in fact it had been as equally long since I'd even seen them around. The packaging although now of a hexagonal nature, was none too different from the one's I used to purchase some years ago. It did however have one added ingredient, a bold set of lettering declaring that the BLUE Smartie was back. I can vaguely recall it's disappearance some while back, but put little significance on it's return, but could see how certain children might well be pleased at it's re-introduction. One thing that does strike you straight away on seeing the packet of Smartie's is that Why did they never think of the Hexagon shape before............it makes so much sense when you consider how unstable the old packaging was when left on a perhaps uneven surface.

Well having now two packets of the sweets I could indulge a little more than perhaps I might have done, There is a very ingenious lid on one end of the hexagonal tube which once opened would appear to be so for good, but a clever little catch system enable it to be shut quite securely again. On opening it you can clearly see that the tube has a cardboard hexagon covering the end to stop the sweets from falling out.

This hexagon has a semi-circular hole cut out from one of it's edges. The hole is just big enough for the smarty's to come through and prevents them ALL from falling out at once, which might be OK for some but I do like to have a decent few smarty's in my mouth at once so I was forced to tilt the packaging a few times until I had the desired amount of sweets in my hand.
It was here that memories came flooding back, the sweets apart from a slightly less bright colouring were the same as they have always been, small half inch beans of crispy coated chocolate. The colours although recognisable as red, yellow green etc did look a bit dull and less bright than I remembered, but I could just as easily be mistaken in this fact. Looks aside the small beans were of the same delicious quality as those of my memories. It did also seem that the crispy candy coating was just a fraction thicker than memory would have me believe.

There is a different flavour to the different colours, but it's resemblance to anything has me baffled and amused at the same time. It is a quite sweet taste and is probably best described as fruity although as to which fruit I am once again baffled. The good news is that there are NO E numbers contained within these beans.

The chocolate is the usual high Nestle standard, which is unfortunate since Cadbury's chocolate would have made the beans so much more enjoyable, that is not to say they are not, they most certainly are. The contrast in textures between the crispy shell and the soft chocolate makes for a sweet strange experience which is one you will not get with make confections these days. As I understand it the Smartie's currently retail at around the 50p mark which I cannot vouch for since mine came with a rather tasty Easter Egg. If 50p is the going rate for a packet of these then by my reckoning they are indeed pretty good value for money. One of the nicest things I discovered is that is it so refreshing these days to find something that hasn't been tampered with, and is just as it has been for many a year. I'm also going to join the kids here in welcoming back the blue Smartie whatever flavour it is supposed to be.

Summary: Nice that some things don't change
