Advantages: Low fat
Disadvantages: Horrid, smelly and expensive!
Quaker 'Snack A Jacks' seem to have been around a couple of years now and are increasingly easy to find on the shelves in our shops and supermarkets. A friend of mine at work has a packet a day and I've seen a couple of opinions on here praising them including Deano who seems to have simular tastes to myself. So having said all of this I purchased a pack earlier in the week, despite my misgivings about all low fat food being substandard in taste in all my previous experiences. Quaker Oats Limited the company that owns this product were formed in 1901 in Ohio, U.S.A by a group of Oats farmers - the old man with the long hair that symbolises Quaker is one of those farmers. Their World HQ is in Chicago but have other premises in all corners of the globe including London, England. A few years ago they merged with PepsiCo making Quaker the fourth largest consumer goods company in the world. An interesting fact that I learned from their website was that Quaker also owns Gatorade who make the Sports energy drinks, Gatorade was originally a drink made for the Florida Gator Football team in the sixties but is was so popular and effective it is now the highest selling sports drink in the World. Quaker's best known products in this country are Sugar Puffs, Quaker Porridge Oats and Harvest Crunch cereal bars. Snack A Jacks come in five different flavours in single form and latterly in multi-packs as well. The flavours are Salt and Vinegar, Cheddar Cheese, Chocolate, Barbecue and Caramel. The packs themselves are made of foil and are mainly orange in colour. The flavours are colour coded to distinguish thelmselves; Salt and Vinegar : Blue Cheddar Cheese : Yellow Chocolate : Brown Barbecue : Red Caramel : Orange The bags are quite big, bigger than your usual run of the mill packet of crisps but have the same amount of product inside, 35g! This rang alarm bells straight away - I hate little things like that, big
bags making you think theres more inside than there actually is. The single bag that I purchased cost me 45p which is at the bottom end of the cost spectrum as I have also seen them for sale at 59p. The multi-packs retail for around £1.30. Upon opening my Caramel bag, the thing that hit me straight away was the smell which is very strong - I have noticed this too when my work pal eats his. They are very reminiscent of 'Doritos' in this way. The snacks themselves are quite large circles and are very light indeed just like 'Quavers' are. They didn't appear very appetising either, quite pale in colour apart from the flavouring which gave them a darker tint in places. Once in your mouth they tasted very light and dissolved quite quickly making them easy to eat. I polished them off in under two minutes not because I'm a greedy bugger but because there was a lack of them inside. I was very unimpressed overall and won't be buying them again not just because they are bland and expensive but because of the aftertaste and smell they give off. It was commented more than once later in the day that I smelt of Caramel so I had to buy some Polos too to disguise the smell making my initial expensive purchase even more so. They are a real passion killer too, my missus refused to kiss me on Valentines Day until I had cleaned my teeth lol ! The thing that weighs in favour of the product is the low fat content (5%) and the low calorie count (140 per bag) which will snare many a dieting consumer but for me personally there are far more appetising and better value products out there. I have given this one star but if I could, I'd give it none. The ingredients for nutrional purposes include Rice, Maize, Sugar, Flavourings, Salt, Milk Protein and Lactose.
