Advantages: A filling snack

Disadvantages: Some yucky ingredients

This is the only chocolate bar that I still buy if I'm hungry whilst out and about and there's nothing else to eat. It's the only sweet that I'll buy from an office vending machine when I've forgotten to take my pack lunch to work. The snack of last resort. I choose a Snickers because it's usually the only one that'll fill me up and keep me going - Crisps are a waste of time, normal chocolate bars just leave you even hungrier an hour later and a Mars bar just won't do it despite claims to the contrary. The 'feeling full' effect is probably due to the fact that more than a quarter of this bar made up of fat (28g per 100g). I like to think that a Snickers bar is a nutritious snack though because it's packed with peanuts and therefore I imagine I'm not just eating pure junk food but also getting some useful vitamins. I don't know whether that's just wishful thinking because they don't mention on the packet what vitamins a Snickers bar does contain. Maybe there are none.

The ingredients however do include milk chocolate that covers the bar no doubt consisting of cocoa butter and cocoa mass. Inside each bar (according to the five pack I bought in Iceland yesterday) you will find to the delight of your taste buds, fresh roasted peanuts (24%) - (but how can they be fresh if the sell-by date is April 2008?), peanut butter nougat (14%) and a yummy caramel centre (27%). On the micro level there is also glucose syrup, vegetable fat, vegetable oil, sugar, skimmed milk powder, salt, lactose, demineralised whey powder, egg white, the emulsifier E442 soya lecithin (where would we be without them?), hydrolyzed milk protein, milk fat, flavouring and the dreaded hydrogenated vegetable fat. If you want to really enjoy a Snickers bar it's best not to read the ingredients.

I find a Snickers bar a really nice and satisfying snack. However, my high satisfaction might have something to do with the fact that I only ever eat a Snickers bar when I'm absolutely famished and my stomach is rumbling with hunger. And this only happens once in a blue moon. Nevertheless I feel replenished after eating one. Snickers bars manage to maintain a perfect equilibrium of chewiness and crunchiness.

Although if I dared eat them regularly on a not so empty stomach they might just taste like all the other sweet and bland junk treats that are the backbone of this great nation. Hunger is possibly the key to my enjoyment. Having said that, I did have one after my dinner last night and it went down rather nice. I've just eaten another one after reading the ingredients on the side of the packet for the paragraph above. I now realise I've eaten more Snickers bars in the last three days than I've eaten in the previous 6 months... and there's still two more left in the kitchen cupboard.

Bye the way, I only bought the five pack because there were no singles available at the checkout. I generally don't recommend buying more than one at a time - you can have too much of a good thing.

Price: a single bar tends to hover around the 36p mark.
My five pack cost £1.45 from Iceland

Not suitable for people with a nut allergy (obviously).
