Advantages: Just a damn good bar

Disadvantages: calories but who cares

In the olden days when things were so much more black and white, and there was not nearly as much choice especially in the confectionery department, these bars were called Marathon's. God only knows why they decided to change the name, but they did kind of set a trend. Since Snickers changed from Marathon so did Opal fruits to Starburst, fortunately in both cases the product remained unaltered.

I'm not an old foggy who believes that things should not change, but I also feel that don't fix it if it ain't broken. The long bar perhaps 5 inches in length has changed little over my period of consumption which spans many a year. It still has that ripple effect on the top chocolate surface and it is still packet with loads of nuts and caramel. This can be better demonstrated by looking at a cross section of the bar. After a cooling period in the fridge you will find that a Snickers bar cuts quite nicely into several decent sized portions just over a quarter of an inch thick, which I believe is the optimal width for a good sized mouthful.

On inspecting the cut slice the first thing you will notice is that it is not as much a mish mash as you perhaps anticipated. It is indeed a very well organised bar with a thick layer of whipped chocolate flavour mousse along its bottom edge. This is then topped with probably one of the best combinations in the history of confection, nuts and caramel. Salty and sweet, sticky and chewy who could ask for more. The whole package is then surrounded by a reasonable thickness of chocolate. The total height by this time is just over an inch and a half nearing the two inch marker.

Each aspect of this bar which retails at around 45p is in it's own right a separate product, the reason for this is that the mousse type filling at the bottom is very similar to that of the filling in a Milky Way bar, The caramel is the same as that in a Mars Bar so merge the two add some nuts to the caramel and hey presto you've got a new bar, which is delicious and is full of things that are both good and bad for you. Great goodness in the nuts, energy from all that sugar and of course an abundance of calories. If one is going to indulge in anything which is even remotely considered to be in the confection category then there is not point worrying about the calories since on the majority of instances you are going to top out your daily allowance very quickly, best just grab a bar and enjoy it worry about the calories later.

There are not many bars that can say they have stayed the distance but Snickers is definitely one of them , and who knows it might even have still made the grade without what I believe to be a pointless name change.

Summary: A truly unique experience worthy of the investment
