Advantages: delicious, long shelf life
Disadvantages: unhealthy, bitter after taste
The soreen malt loaf is one of those snacks that has been round for a very long time and yet I often overlook it when I'm shopping.
The loaf itself is shaped like a small loaf of bread. It is extremely dark in colour, a very dark brown.
The loaf itself is pretty difficult to slice as it is so soft that it always loses its shape, using a very sharp knife seems to make the process easier.
Once you have a slice it is lovely spread with butter which. It has a very odd texture, it is extremely chewy and sticky but not through added sugar. The taste is lovely and unique, a combination of distinctive malt mixed with raisins, unlike most cakes it is not very sweet, it is almost savoury and leaves a slightly bitter aftertaste. It is extremely filling so a small slice will fill you up.
The name malt loaf may conjour up images of bread but this is in my eyes more of a cake than a bread.
What I like about this loaf is that unlike many baked goods it has a long shelf life. I bought two loafs on special offer several weeks ago and have just got round to eating the second one and it is still fresh so they are ideal to keep in the cupboard.
The kids dont like this snack because it has raisins and is not sweet enough for them, thats fine because it means theres more for me!
Despite the claims on the pack that this is a low fat snack, it is still unhealthy with 86 calories per 1/8 of the loaf and since 1/8 of the loaf is tiny the chances are you will eat more. It is even unhealthier once you add butter to it but is still ok to eat in moderation.
It generally costs about 80p for a small loaf but is fairly frequently on special offer, I bought mine two for a pound at the co-op.
Summary: Sticky but not sweet
