Advantages: tasty and healthy
Disadvantages: none
I was at my sister's the other day when I spotted a bright yellow packet in her bread bin. Closer examination revealed that she has been buying Soreen malt loaves - something we all used to love as children. I persuaded her to let me try a bit and it brought back lots of lovely foody memories from the past. Coincidentally, the next day I was in Tesco and I noticed that they had a BOGOF offer on the very same malt loaves and I just could not resist!
The loaf comes in a very tempting bright yellow plastic package which keeps it nicely fresh. It's described as a fruity malt loaf and one thing tht caught my eye is the fact that it is low in fat. In fact it is less than 3% fat which is very good. Also calories are pretty good with only 86.6 for one tenth of the loaf. The packet also tells me that it is suitable for vegetarians and also very usefully as I had taken advantage of the BOGOF offer, that it is suitable for home freezing.
The loaf probably provides about ten slices. It does not come sliced though so it depends how generously you cut it! Cutting it can be a bit tricky though as it has quite a squashy texture so you can be in danger of misshaping it as you cut. You need a strong sharp knife and a firm hand!
The main ingredients are wheat flour and raisins and this produces a very dense sticky consistency. It is also a very dark colour which my daughter thought was chocolate and asked to try a bit. She was very disappointed to discover it was fruity instead and promptly declared that she did not want any more! I didn't mind as it is quite an acquired taste and it meant that there was all the more for me!
I enjoy eating this malt loaf with just a little butter spread on it. The mixture of that with the fruit really is delicious and the taste of the fruit is very strong. The consistency is very sticky though and it does tend to stick to your teeth quite a lot! I love the chewy sticky texture though.
I do think that this makes a very tasty snack and provides a good alternative for unhealthier sugary options. The trouble is that it is very moreish though and if you're not careful you could easily eat half a loaf without realising!
The malt loaf is very reasonably priced too with Tesco selling it for seventy eight pence. As I said, at the moment they have a 'buy one get one free offer' on so two loaves for seventy eight pence is fantastic! Also they have quite a good shelf life - the use by date is over three weeks away so you could stock up while it's on offer!

I really enjoy this Soreen malt loaf and I suspect I shall be adding it to my shopping list in the future.
Summary: It's very fruity!
