Advantages: tastes great
Disadvantages: sugar content
Malt Loaf seems to be one of those firm family favourites that we all know and love, yet it's an ugly little thing. Looking like a shrunken, shrivelled and rotten loaf of bread, it's not the most appetising looking food, but stick a bit of butter on it and pop it in your mouth and you'll soon forget what it looks like.
Malt Loaf is made up of a mixture of ingredients:
Wheat Flour, Water, Raisins, Starch, Inverted sugar syrup, Malted barley flour, Malted barley extract, Dried whey, Vegetable fat, Salt, Yeast, Preservative E282, Emulsifier E471.
The whole thing about malt is it's hard to explain or describe, but I can tell you that this is similar to fruit-cake, just chewier and sweeter.
Nutritionally, it's like many sweet products, in that it has a fair old amount of sugar in it, and therefore packs a lot of calories per 100g:
Calories 314
Protein 7
Carbohydrate 66.9
Fat 2
Fibre 2.5
Alcohol 0
Of course, this means it should not be eaten on a daily basis, as it has a similar sugar content to biscuits, but for the occasional treat it's perfect.
The loaf can best be described as a rich fruity cake, which is sticky and treacely (if that's a word). It's very chewy, and the raisins interspersed throughout help to give it a moist taste.
Popping it in your mouth, its hard outer edges house the softer, pliant inside. The taste is sweet, with the raisins noticeable, and the consistency is firm and chewy. On its own, it is a little dry, but a generous slathering of margerine will moisten it up and make it slide down your throat with ease.
I would recommend it on a hot summer's day; the cool butter will refresh you, and the rich fruit with give you energy.
All in all, a delightful little treat that makes a break from eating biscuits.
Summary: do it
