Advantages: Healthy, cheap, handy low fat snack.
Disadvantages: When the shops don't put these in the fridge.
What is it?
********
A small pack of malt loaf slices.
Special features?
*************
The malt loaf is made from Soreen's unique and secret recipe, it claims to be a great healthy source of carbohydrates, to be eaten as part of a balanced diet and is also low in fat. Normally, Soreen sells these in loaves - this snack pack consists of two small malt loaf slices and exclusively spread with a portion of Anchor's butter.
How do I eat this?
**************
Although I reckon the loaf can be eaten at any time of day, the way it has been presented as a snack it's probably intended as part of lunch or an afternoon break sugar booster.
As a ready-made and prepared snack pack, there nothing to do but to open the yellow foil packet, take it out of the plastic tub and enjoy!
Does it taste good?
***************
When you first bite into a slice of Soreen's , the first thing you taste is the subtle sweetness of the malt loaf. The firmness of the outer layer of the slice surprises you when you have taken a bite into its much softer middle - not spongy, but surprisingly quite chewy and is very prone to sticking to the teeth. The loaf is made with 14% raisins so there is a diverse range of soft moist textures with just one mouthful.
Served with a spread of butter, the overall sweetness is rounded off - making it seem more balanced, perhaps even more savoury tasting. The first time I bought these, they were located in the refrigerators - after all, it makes sense with the Anchor butter that is included with it... However, on another occasion I had picked up a pack of these from a standard stock shelf without giving any thought to the butter content - foolish, I know, but I think at the time I was just so hungry I couldn't think straight. You could say they shouldn't be there in the first place - but it was too late, I've eaten it and I'm still here...(touch wood). At a warmer temperature, the slices taste much softer and also stickier, this is compared with the firmer textures when it has been refrigerated. However, it doesn't really taste so good when the butter has gone soft as well. This will make me remember to buy and take it from the fridge...
Cost?
****
Around 45p for a small pack of two buttered slices.
Anything else?
***********
The loaf is suitable for home freezing and also for vegetarians.
However, Soreen does also contain wheat, gluten and whey (from cow's milk).
Personally, I find it much cheaper and better to buy the whole loaf and to spread with my own fresh butter from the fridge! However, it is quite handy to have these about when you haven't had the time to make anything in the morning and the pre-packs are not too expensive anyway.
A tasty healthy snack. Definitely recommend.
