Special K Chocolate Chip Bars

Advantages: low in calories

Disadvantages: dry and not much taste

I'm often on the look out for snack bars that will deliver on taste but not on my waist! Cereal bars can often meet this criteria but I do think that it's a bit hit and miss on the taste side of things. As Kelloggs Special K is my favourite breakfast cereal I thought I would give these chocolate chip bars a try when I saw them on offer in Sainsburys.

The first thing that caught my eye was the fact that each bar contains less than 90 calories. That really compares very well to lots of other snacks and biscuits particularly as it's not a particularly small bar weighing 21 grams. In actual fact a bar only contains 84 calories which is only 4% of an adult's guideline daily allowance (GDA). Other nutritional values are 7 grams sugar, 1.5 grams fat and 0.5 grams saturates. Also with 0.1 gram salt this means that this really is a very healthy cnack all round.

Each bar comes individually wrapped in a plastic wrapper wirth the familiar Special K logo. On the box there is a picture of what the bar looks like and it does seem to offer an ample supply of chocolate chips. The other main ingredients are Kellogg's Special K, sugar, wheat gluten and dried skimmed milk making them very suitable for vegetarians.

When I first tasted one of these bars my immediate reaction was that it was quite dry and brittle. It feels that it could do with some added ingredient to make it just a little more moist and chewy. Having said that though, the taste is not unpleasant but you definitely need the sprinkling of chocolate chips to liven it all up a bit. Strangely though, it's one of those foods that the more you eat it, the more it actually grows on you! It's also quite a substantial bar and quite filling. One of these should definitely satisfy any mid morning cravings and keep you going until lunch time.

I also think that these bars are pretty expensive for what they are. A packet of 6 costs £1.97 in Sainsburys. This makes them over 30 pence a bar although I did buy them when they were on a multi-buy offer.

Overall these snack cereal bars are OK but I think there are much nicer ones (such as Harvest Chewy bars) out these which will tick all the same nutritional values. They are definitely worth a try but I don't honestly think that I will be buying them again even if I was on the strictest diet imagineable!

Summary: I think I'll stick to Special K with milk in future!

For the same sort of calories/fat/weightwatche rs points etc, I like the rice crispy Squares with chocolate - give them a try as an alternative to the special k bars!
