Spreads

Description: A spread is a dense, soft condiment that can be spread onto other dishes, for flavor or texture. Common spreads include ... more
Spreads ... cheeses, creams, and butters (spreads made from milk; though the term butter is broadly applied to many spreads); and jams and jellies (spreads made from fruit). Spreads are also made from vegetables (e.g., vegemite, babaganoush, salsas) and meats (e.g., pâté, fleischbutter). Terms like "butter," "paste," and "sauce" are used casually in this context; and the line between sauces and spreads is rather fuzzy. Olive paste, Cranberry sauce and mayonnaise (the latter two also being sauces) are examples of spreads on the boundary of this category.

It is also suitable for vegetarians which is symbolised by a green letter 'v'. The lid tells you that 'it is 59% vegetable fat spread made from a blend of vegetable oils and buttermilk'. I'm not a big bread eater but if I do make a sandwich I do find I need to spread something on the bread otherwis I find it too dry, that is unless the sandwich mi contains something that makes it moist such as mayonnaise. My spread of choice is Tesco Enriched Olive Spread which can be found on the shelves alongside the other margarines and butters. This is a reduced fat spread made with a blend of vegetable oils and olive oil and is a good source of vitamen B6 and Folic Acid. It has a pale yellow colour and is soft so it spreads really easy straight from the fridge. It is high in mono - unsaturates and low in saturates and has a melow buttery smell. ...

I'm moving next week. We're living in limbo, half-packed. We're going to live in a small village. For privacy's sake, let's call it The Back Of Beyond. The Back Of Beyond doesn't have a broadband or cable service yet - argh - and neither does it have a gas supply. And so I've just waved goodbye to my gas oven as it is now not only old, but surplus to requirements. It went into the skip with the rest of the household detritus. If it can't be slowcooked, microwaved, or eaten cold, then, for the next ten days, we Murphys ain't eating it. I'm a bit depressed. I do so hate microwaved food. Ooh though, I still have my ...

I was shopping in Superdrug last week and spied Princes Salmon Paste for 39p for a 75g jar. I didn't realise they still made this so was really pleased so popped a couple of jars in my basket thinking they'd come in useful sometime..... Ha! - as soon as I unpacked everything I thought I'd try some for lunch - where did the rest of the jar go to?! I love fish, especially salmon, but can't be bothered to open a can, drain off the juice, add vinegar and black pepper just for a sandwich which only me in the family likes. So it was pure convenience, or laziness, that made me buy this paste. No way can it be called a ...
