Advantages: very cheap & tasty in butties
Disadvantages: nutritionally not brilliant
I was shopping in Superdrug last week and spied Princes Salmon Paste for 39p for a 75g jar.
I didn't realise they still made this so was really pleased so popped a couple of jars in my basket thinking they'd come in useful sometime.....
Ha! - as soon as I unpacked everything I thought I'd try some for lunch - where did the rest of the jar go to?!
I love fish, especially salmon, but can't be bothered to open a can, drain off the juice, add vinegar and black pepper just for a sandwich which only me in the family likes.
So it was pure convenience, or laziness, that made me buy this paste.
No way can it be called a substitute for the real stuff but at 39p you can't complain can you?
We used to have beef or salmon paste as children so it was a step back in time putting this on my wholemeal bread and brought back memories of Saturday teatimes with the family.
The 7g jar could be re-used or re-cycled as the screw-top is easy to open (doesn't need a knife etc) so I may sterilise one & opo some dried herbs in as it's an ideal size.
The paste itself smells nice and 'salmony' probably due to the additives and there's no 'gunge' on the top of it so you can dive straight in!
The paste ( or spread) is a good consistency - spreads well and is not lumpy and the orange colour is not too bright.
ingredients
~
It says on the jar that it contains 70% fish -which comprises 30% minced salmon, 8% cod and 22% mackerel.
The rest of the ingredients include starches, vinegar, pepper, salt, sugar and tomato paste
nutritional info

As there seemed to be a high fat content I didn't butter the bread first - it really didn't need it.
I popped some lettuce and cucumber in the sandwich and served with a small salad.
I'd reckon you could make 2 or 3 butties from this jar or it would be nice served with fresh baguette
Not the most exciting snack you may think, but I really enjoyed it and will make sure I keep it in stock for myself.
All the fishy taste without the hassle!
No wonder Princes have been around for 100 years!
Summary: a good fishy paste/spread for an instant sandwich

- 26/09/08 Have Prince's taken over the Shippam's paste range? Recently I went round the supermarket looking for something healthy for lunch and I picked Shippam's salmon paste because there was no sugar in it whereas there was in their beef paste. |

- 30/07/08 I love this but whenever I open a jar my husband cringes. He thinks it is awful stuff. |
