Advantages: Easy to use, inexpensive compared to others, tasty

Disadvantages: None

In my drive to reduce my food shopping bill in the light of the constantly rising food prices, I have recently discovered an own-brand spread that I am very impressed with. It is called The Co-operative Buttery and is as good as any similar spread that I have used but, of course, cheaper. My local Co-op sells it for £1.19 for a 500gm tub, at least 12p cheaper than it's nearest rival, and a lot cheaper than most. You can also buy a smaller tub for 82p which is not so money-saving.

The nutritional information on the bright yellow tub says that a 10gm serving contains 55 calories, 5.9gms of fat, 0.1gm of sugar, 0.2gms of salt and 1.8gms of saturated fats. It is also suitable for vegetarians which is symbolised by a green letter 'v'. The lid tells you that 'it is 59% vegetable fat spread made from a blend of vegetable oils and buttermilk'.

The Co-operative Buttery is made in the Republic of Ireland but using ingredients from various countries and Irish Buttermilk. It is suitable for freezing as long as you freeze it on the day of purchase and use it within one month. Otherwise, it must be kept in the refrigerator at 2 to 8 degrees C.

I find this spread is ideal for spreading on sandwiches, greasing baking dishes and sauteing vegetables, and mixes well with things like garlic to make a delicious tasty spread.
I am gradually trying more and more own-brand food products and will review these as and when they have been vigorously tested in my kitchen!

Summary: I will stick to this now because it is moneysaving but does not compromise on quality

I've also been switching brands to save money on food. This sounds good, but I don't have a Co-op near me unfortunately
