Formally Opal Fruits, hence the title. OK most of you are probably far far too young to remember the advertisement for Opal Fruits but it was a nice little ditty that kinda caught on for a while. Opal fruits made to make your moth water was the punchline of the advert. And indeed they are.
Starburst as they are now known ( although I do here people from time to time still refer to them by their previous name ) are fruit flavoured chews and when I say fruit I MEAN fruit. There are Lime, Orange, Blackcurrant and Strawberry flavours in the packet and unfortunately the choice you get in the packet is totally random. This is probably the only criticism I have for a product which is generally of very high quality.
The sweets themselves are perhaps one inch square by 1/4 inch high and warpped in the appropriate colour greasproof paper for their flavour. That being Purple for Blackcurrant Orange for orange, I don't think I need explain that much more. There are about 14 sweets in each packet which is wrapped further in a bright yellow greasproof wrapper. i think they use greaseproof to keep all the juices in LOL.
The flavours here are exceptional, the blackcurrant is sweet and fruity, but somewhat sickly. The orange is positively juicy ever so slightly bittersweet. The lime is absolutely deliciously citrus, it draws the cheeks together, while the flavour shines through and is most enjoyable. However for me the pick of the quartet is the Strawberry it is probably one of the most strawberry like strawberry tasting strawberry things I've tasted. If only I had some cream. Now it's your Donald Duck what flavours you actually get in the packet but five will get you ten that your favourite flavour is in the minority regradless.
Every flavours exicite your tastebuds and get the old juices flowing hence the line from the add, they are a brilliant chew and still as popular as ever even with the name change, which as of yet I have not been able to determine why. The citrus essences burst onto your tongue as soon as you start chewing and until the last little bit is gone the flavour contunues as vivid as the first chew.
They are not a hard chew in fact you can squash them in your fingers quite easily, they do have a tendaancy to stick to your teeth. At about 22p a packet they are great value and the kids will go daft for them. The bright yellow packet is instantly recognisable, but sadly the old ditty has seen its day.
Summary: A great little chew
