Starburst fruit chews

If you have a packet of these sweets they are ideal for a trick I would play on Halloween trick and treated ghouls that call at my door.

First let me tell you about starburst fruit chews, they used to be called Opal fruits in my day.
Made to make your mouth water was the old advertising slogon, I can still remember the tune. Now the slogan is “Isn’t life fun “, in Australia the slogan is different its “beware of the fruit”

Opal oopps sorry Starburst is made by Mars
incorporated. Opal fruits introduced in 1971. In 1998 the name changed to Starburst.

Originally there were four flavours only Strawberry, lemon, lime and orange must admit I was not too keen on the lime. Black currant and cherry flavours have been added and the lemon and lime sweets now are just a single lemon and lime flavour.
In America there are more flavours added to the pack.

The version of Starburst fruit chews you can get in England is vegetarian where as the American version is not as the flavours unique to their packaging contain gelatine.
These sweets are small squares of chewy fruit sweets about 1 inch square they are about ¼ inch high. Each one is individually wrapped in a greaseproof paper , each flavour is wrapped in a coulour that we all know to represent that fruit .

Unwrapp and the sweet is couloured a fruit colour too. The sweet is a soft if you squeeze it between your finger and thumb it squashes. Put one in your mouth and it is chewy. As you chew this sweet you release the fruit flavour which is very much like the fruit .The flavours are not over sweet. As you chew these sweets do make your mouth water they are very chewy. They are delicious. Starburst are not a hard chew but a soft one. They do get a bit sticky if left in a warm place. These sweets are good to have if you are thirsty and have no acces to water as they do refresh you . They are tangy and juicy. Although not a favourite sweet of mine I would certainly be happy to eat them .
These sweets are made with real fruit juices the ingredients as follows Glucose Syrup, Sugar, Fruit Juices (7.6%) (Lemon, Lime, Strawberry, Orange, Blackcurrant, Apple), Hydrogenated Vegetable Fat, Citric Acid, Modified Starch, Dextrin, Maltodextrin, Flavourings, Colours*, *E122, E132, E160a

These sweets are available in most shops that sell sweets. Tesco sells the 45g stick in its bright yellow orange wrapping for 31p., they are available in a pack of 4 for £1.01 cheaper it works out at 26p a stick. Opal, Opppps Starburst are sold in packs of 200g for £1.08. Tesco also sell the sour fruit version of Starburst.

Now I might buy Starburt fruit chews sweets for my Halloween treats.
I shall greet the little evil ones at the door with a tub that has a lid on it, there will be a hole in the lid just big enoughth to put a hand in, the ghosts will not be able to see inside , I will invite them to put their grubby hands into the tub where they will feel a revolting jelly substance (real tesco value jelly not sure what flavour yet .) It will feel disgusting all squidgy and well all squelchy and slimyv , hee hee hee , The witches will squirm in distaste the ghouls will go yeuk. In the gunk there will be a hard square yes they pick this square up and take it out of the pot. The little monsters discover it’s a treat a starburst sweet that they can unwrap and eat.
I shall keep some tissue on hand by the door as I do not want jelly sqiished and squashed everywhere over my carpet .

So welcome to my house on halloweeen and get slimed by jelly haa haa hee hee cackle cackle

A note for those calorie conscious witches there are 396 cal per 100g

Summary: Starburt once called opal fruits fruity chews
