Advantages: Toffifee have a lovely flavour and mix of textures
Disadvantages: They are not available like other chocolates
For Easter I brought my younger daughter a box of Toffifee which are made by Storck and before she went home she left me a few of them to have after my tea.
Toffifee come in a box that contains a cardboard tray and then another tray that is made of plastic and this is the one that holds the chocolates in little cup indents in the tray. It is quite a lot of packaging and each tray of Toffifee is individually wrapped in thin plastic too but I cannot see how they could reduce the packaging and still be able to present the chocolates to look good. It is all recyclable though so that isn't too bad when I compare it to a pack of apples I brought last month in the supermarket that was wrapped in a tight layer of plastic and then in 2 plastic bags, and then the lady serving put them into a carrier bag which was very annoying.
The Toffifee chocolates are shaped like a ball that has been cut in half and each one is a perfect mouthful if you want to pop it straight into your mouth but I think the nicest way to eat them is to bite them in half so that you can get a proper taste of all the layers of this chocolate. Each Toffifee is a cup of toffee that is filled with a softer chocolate tasting caramel with a whole hazelnut in the middle and a large button of dark chocolate on the top. They do not look appetising at all to me but I think they will taste nicer than they look.
The toffee cup is quite thin but it is very chewy and got stuck to my false teeth a little bit. It is not so chewy that it makes my jaw ache but I think if it was even a millimetre thicker then it would be too much. The toffee has a lovely buttery fresh flavour and it is nice and sweet as I chew it. It is a very nice toffee and I think it is similar in flavour to the new Werthers toffees I have been buying. The caramel inside is not like any caramel I have tried before and I don't even class it as a caramel because it is more like soft chocolate in texture and taste. It has the sort of consistency of the inside of a Lindt Lindor chocolate but is not as luxurious and has a more solid texture. The taste is lovely though and I peeled the toffee cup away so I could eat just the caramel filling and thought it tasted like a sugary chocolate with just the barest hint of the flavour of caramel. This filling melts in my mouth as I eat it and has an after taste that is actually richer than the initial flavour.
The hazelnut gives a nice crunch to an otherwise very smooth and chewy chocolate. The filling is quite creamy in texture and when I got to the nut it was a lovely surprise even though I knew it was there. The chocolate button adds a little bit more richness to each Toffifee and even though it is not the best quality chocolate in the world it definitely has something about it that makes it rich and very strong tasting. All of the flavours in Toffifee are very nice together and the different textures make it an interesting chocolate to eat. The toffee cup is chewy and then the filling is creamy with the brittle nut inside and the chocolate is solid but it has a nice melt in my mouth consistency.
Toffifee can be hard to find and this is why I buy my daughters a box for every Christmas, birthday and Easter. I know Aldi sometimes sell the smaller boxes of 16 but I think the bigger boxes are only available all year round in places like Woolworths and they cost about £3. 50 for I think about 40 chocolates. They are very moreish so I am glad my daughter only left me with 6 chocolates because I think I could have eaten a full box and that would not have pleased my Weightwatchers leader.
Summary: Toffifee is a very tasty and quite different chocolate
