Advantages: Great Taste

Disadvantages: Quite Sugary

I first became aware of 'Werther's Originals' when I was around twelve or thirteen years old, in the midst of my schooldays. I don't know how I hadn't noticed the popular sweet before that time, but from the moment I first tasted one, I was hooked, and my young mind informed me that I had found a new favourite confectionary.

If you aren't aware, a Wethers Original is a fairly small and hard butterscotch toffee with rounded edges and an indented centre. I say 'toffee', but you can't chew it - it's more of a sweet to suck, although I have heard that you can now purchase a softer version.

The hard nature of the sweet means that it isn't really suitable for young kids to be left alone with, as it can present a real choking hazard - especially if sucked with the delighted enthusiasm of youth.

Apparently named after the German villiage of Werther in Westphalia where the company was founded in 1903, Wether's Originals currently cost £1.60 from Tesco for the 300g bag. Apart from the supermarkets, they are also readily available from a range of other shops throughout the UK.

I think we can all probably remember the unusual ad campaign which promoted Werther's Originals, and whilst many people found it heartwarming, I found it a little creepy (hence my title) ;)

The poplar sweets contains;
Sugar, Glucose Syrup, Cream (7%), Condensed Whey, Butter (4.5%), Treacle, Salt, Butterfat, and Emulsifier (Soya Lecithin, Flavouring).

Each individually wrapped Werther's Original is absolutely delicious - really buttery and fantastically creamy. The creamy nature is no surprise, as you can see from the above ingredient list that seven percent of each sweet is pure cream - mmmm. The smooth nature of Werther's means that sucking them is a real pleasure, and doing so in a gentle manner will result in each sweet lasting for a fairly long time - so you get good value for money also.

The aroma is similarly delicious, and merely opening a packet of these creamy beauties releases a fantastically toffee-like scent into the air.

As sweets go, the flavour of Wether's Original has to be right up there with the best, and although I don't buy the awesome butterscotch confectionary on a regular basis, I would nevertheless wholeheartedly recommend them to others.
