When you open the jar there's usually an alarming layer of oil on top but don't be put off: stir it back in as much as you can or else the peanut butter at the bottom of the jar will be dry & crumbly when you get to it. I like the variety with salt best as the other is just way too bland for me. Some peanut butters are really dark & taste too 'toasted' but this has a lovely nutty smell & a fresh, lightly roasted flavour - like good salted peanuts, in fact - but not too overpowe...more

Originally a small scale operation in the 70's selling rice & dried fruit from the back room of a house in Leeds, the Suma co-op grew rapidly & expanded their range, selling (among other things) peanut butter made in-house by the workers. The peanut butter machine was a casualty of a devastating flood in the 90's that also destroyed tons of stock, so Suma - now a massive operation in shiny new premises near Halifax - now outsources its peanut butter production. There's still something old-fashioned & wholesome about it though. My sister and I are huge fans of peanut butter . . . I like the smooth one while my sister prefers the crunchy peanut butter . . . but in both cases; we enjoy eating it whether smooth or crunchy. I used to have it for school lunches; fast and easy to prepare and it was essential to have in our kitchen cabinet. It tastes splendid on its own (although it's hard to swallow and can dry your throat!) or you can add some moisture to it with jam, marmalade or honey.
