Advantages: affordable, texture, taste, smell, easily spreadable, no bits stuck in teeth
Disadvantages: would like the smell to be stronger
Sun-Pat Super Smooth Peanut Butter contains peanuts and is therefore not recommended to people who have any form of nut allergy. It also doesn’t contain sheep, cow, pig or goat and can therefore be deemed suitable for consumption by vegetarians. There you go readers, the bleedin’ obvious stuff out of the way.
With a strange obsession for weird blends when it comes to sandwiches, bagels or just toast I have been known to mix ham with strawberry jam (don’t knock it until you’ve tried it) and bacon on toast with peanut butter. The subject of my review today, Sun-Pat Super Smooth is my regular brand for reasons I will set out further, but as far as I am concerned it is the best available when it comes to peanut butter in terms of taste. A 340g jar only costs £1.29 in my local supermarket and lasts normally 6-8 weeks in my house with fairly regular consumption by both my husband and I.
As I have sensitive teeth the other varieties of Sun-Pat peanut butters with large crunchy chunks of peanut are quite difficult for me to chew, this is why in my opinion this is the best peanut butter. Despite the lack of obvious peanut chunks found in other varieties there is no compromise in smell or taste, the only real difference is in texture and this for me is one huge advantage. Every variety of peanut butter in the Sun-Pat range looks the same (a pale peanut colour) and therefore it is essential that when looking to buy a jar you double check the labels as the colours have negligible differences, and indeed the peanut butter in the jar I have been using is slightly darker in colour than the new jar I bought yesterday evening. I would have assumed that this may be down to either higher or lower peanut content in different batches but a quick taste test shows no noticeable difference in the taste.
The jars are easy to open and once the lid is removed there is no real aroma to speak of. You really do have to press your nose into the jar to detect the sweet, rich smell of peanuts. Being a big fan of all things sweet and nuts this is nearly orgasmic although I would have love the smell to be a little stronger. As soon as you take a dollop of the butter out of the jar the smell does get a touch stronger, however it still isn’t as strong as I would like.
Spreading over sandwiches or toast is a breeze thanks to the soft texture of the butter. As the knife runs over the bread the tiny pieces of peanut within the butter are really easy to spot. When I first used the smooth variety I was delighted to see that the pieces were so small that they wouldn’t hurt by teeth as I chewed. If the pieces had been larger I would have been without doubt upset and it would have made spreading a lot harder.
The most important thing a reader is going to want to know is the taste along with how it compares to the chunkier varieties. Well, it is something of a taste sensation and while trying to put this into words I have had to try a slice of toast coated a centimetre deep in the butter. The first taste of the butter won’t leave you thinking of a nut explosion in your mouth, in fact the first things that spring to mind is how sweet, rich and creamy the butter is with the really strong peanut taste not filtering through a good few seconds and not until after a few chews. The peanut taste seems to have been blended into the butter to provide an almost sweet peanut aftertaste that lingers in the back of your mouth for a good few moments between bites. Divine!
Overall I cannot recommend Sun-Pat Super Smooth Peanut Butter more highly. If you don’t like peanuts or have an allergy to nuts I would suggest that you steer well clear of this product and the other varieties in the Sun-Pat range, however if you are looking for a spread with a lovely sweet nutty taste without large chunks of peanut that will stick to, and get stuck in your teeth then you cannot do better than the smooth variety. Personally I have had no trouble with my teeth using this brand due to the small size of the peanuts blended into the butter and will contain to use and enjoy peanut butter. I've never had a bad jar so the product quality, consistency, taste and value for money get a 5* rating.
Summary: a quality product with a gorgeous consistency and taste
