Advantages: Good value for money, full of flavour, filling
Disadvantages: Only avialble at Tesco, difficult to get out of foil base
With me being a vegetarian, I am sometimes limited as to what quiches I can eat. One of my favourites is the Tesco Broccoli Quiche.
Packaging
The quiche comes in a green box with a picture of the quiche on the front with Tesco Broccoli quiche written on the front. On the back is all the usual information such as ingredients, cooking instructions and weight. The quiche I am reviewing is a 400 gram quiche.
Price
Obviously, this quiche is only available in Tesco and here it costs £2.80 for two which I consider to be reasonable. The best thing is that this special offer is one of Tesco’s ‘long term offers’ which means they are pretty much always available for that price.
If you just want to buy the one quiche then they are £1.48 each.
Sizes
These quiches come in two sizes - the small sizes (not sure of exact weight) that are perfect for one person or for cooking and popping in your lunchbox for work or just to have as a snack. They also do the larger which I should imagine is designed to serve 4 people but my boyfriend and I usually have half each because we are pigs!
Cooking Instructions
Unfortunately quiches can only be cooked in the oven, either from frozen or fresh. If you are cooking the quiche fresh then you will need to put it in the oven for 20-25 minutes on Gas Mark 6. If cooking from frozen, it takes a while longer – 40-45 minutes, again on Gas Mark 6.
To cook, remove packaging and place on a baking tray in the centre of a pre-heated oven.
The Quiche
The filling of the Broccoli quiche is obviously broccoli mixed with the usual ingredients of a quiche such as egg, cheese, milk etc. The quiche weighs 400 grams and is about 6 inches wide at the widest point. The base comes up about 2 cm’s around the edge or the quiche ensuring that the middle doesn’t collapse while you are cooking it.
Taste
The ingredients of the centre of the quiche are mixed together to produce a fluffy and almost creamy centre to the quiche. I always find the filling of a quiche rather odd because while it is fluffy, it also gels together well and still has a fairly solid texture meaning it will not fall apart as you are trying to eat it. I find that this quiche is a perfect balance as some quiches I have eaten have been very eggy which I don’t find very pleasant. Tesco put a good amount of broccoli in the quiche and it almost melts in your mouth because it is so tender.
The base is delicious and my favourite part of the quiche! It nice and crispy and really tastes like it fresh homemade pastry (even when cooking from frozen). Although it is crispy, the moment you bite into it, it crumbles in your mouth and really adds the finishing touch to the quiche. I also like the fact that the pastry does not absorb the flavour of the quiche and still tastes like pastry as on some quiches I have eaten the pastry goes soggy because of the filling of the quiche and doesn’t really taste like pastry.
Range
As well as producing the broccoli quiche Tesco also have a fairly good selection of other flavours such as Cheese and Onion, Ham Cheese and Onion, Roasted Vegetable, Mushroom and Quiche Lorraine to name a few.
Extra Information
This quiche can be eaten hot and cold (and tastes great both ways!)
This quiche can be frozen so you don’t have to eat it straight away after buying it; I always find it handy to just freeze one for when you fancy it. It does not contain nuts and is suitable for vegetarians.
Summary
I would certainly recommend this quiche; it is a nice meal whether eaten hot or cold. I think they are good value for money, especially considering they are on the long term offer of two for £2.80. I usually eat the quiche with jacket potato and beans or a salad and it’s nice and filling.
The quiche could easily feed a family of four (as long as it is served with other ingredients). I like the fact that it also tastes great cold as this means you can cook it in the evening and it makes a great addition to a packed lunch.
My only grumble with this product is that it is quite difficult to get out of the foil base firstly without burning yourself and secondly without breaking the quiche.
Summary: A healthy and yummy quiche, good for eating as part of a meal or on its own.
