r>Terry?s Chocolate Oranges have long been a favourite in our house, and indeed while I was growing up. We always tend to buy at least two at Christmas, which never last long, but this year we tried something different.

Terry?s have been manufacturing chocolate since 1886, but before the success of the Chocolate Orange, they introduced the Chocolate Apple in 1931. The new range proved to be so successful that in 1926 the firm launched the Chocolate Orange, which was a resounding success. Although the firm stopped manufacturing the Chocolate Oranges during the war period because they could not import the ingredients from abroad, production began again in 1949 and due to its phenomenal success, the Chocolate Apple was withdrawn from sale in 1954. Terry?s Plain Chocolate Orange hit the shops in 1975 but nothing proved to be as popular as the Milk Chocolate Orange. Since then, Terry?s have introduced the Chocolate Orange Bar, the White Chocolate Snowball, which was available for a limited period only, and more recently, Chocolate Orange Mini Segments to offer consumers a little variation on a theme. At the end of last year Terry?s decided that their already extensive range was not enough, and introduced Segsations.

The Segsations are individual crescent shaped segments of Terry?s Chocolate, all orange flavoured, but each having a different texture or flavoured chocolate. The Segsations can be purchased in a variety of sizes, and we purchased a 330g container from Woolworths, which cost £4.99. However, I was disappointed to find that ASDA were selling a 962g tin just after the Christmas period, at a greatly reduced price of £6.48.

The container is fashioned from dark blue plastic, with an orange lid, and is shaped rather like a semi circular litter bin that can be fastened to walls.

Opening the container, one can imagine being in a citrus grove. The delicious scent of chocolate and orange is all too apparent, and a pile of bright
ly coloured wrapped segments nestle together in the container.

A rich red coloured wrapping envelops a segment of Milk Chocolate Orange, but a surprise awaits me when I turn the segment over for closer inspection. I realise that this is no normal Orange segment. Oh no, this has a layer of plain chocolate forming its base. An absolutely perfect piece of thick chocolate, which cracks satisfyingly in the teeth, giving way to an explosion of orange flavour. The combination of milk and dark chocolate creates an interesting taste sensation, the milk chocolate being smooth and creamy, yet with a slightly bubbly texture, and the thin layer of plain chocolate beneath adds just a hint of bitterness. Although there is no visible join between the two layers of chocolate, the texture of each is quite different, with the bottom layer feeling almost shiny as the teeth penetrate its smooth surface. Glorious.

The next segment I pull out of the tub has a cream wrapping, leaving me in no doubt that the segment within is going to be one of white chocolate, and I am not disappointed. A rich aroma of oranges and cream explodes from the wrapper as it is opene, and I am greeted by the sight of a smooth segment of creamy whiteness. The citrussy orange flavour blends deliciously with the smooth chocolate to give an amazing flavour, and as I am normally no lover of white chocolate the fact that I like this is somewhat strange. The chocolate is not overly rich, as is the case with so many varieties of white chocolate, but has a smooth texture. In fact there is no visible taste of the chocolate unless you savour the segment on the tongue, due to the orange flavouring being the most prominent factor. Even then, there is only a very faint creamy taste and the chocolate does not coat the tongue like so many other versions do. Divine.

The familiar dark blue wrapping of the next segment give me a hint of what to expect when I release the Segsation from its coverings
. A milk chocolate segment positively oozing with the delicious aroma of oranges awaits my tastebuds. The chocolate itself is of sufficient thickness to break with a resounding snap as it is bitten, and the orange flavour wraps itself tantalisingly around the tongue, leaving the smooth creamy chocolate to positively glide down the throat. Again, the chocolate has a somewhat bubbly texture and melts in the mouth leaving a pleasant orange taste, which is both authentic and delicious. Wonderful.

The next Segsation is covered in a Summery coloured orange wrapper, and to all intents and purposes, looks like a normal milk chocolate orange segment. However, when I bite into the thick milk chocolate, what a surprise awaits me. Scattered throughout the segment are tiny pieces of honeycomb, with an absolutely perfect crispness. The honeycomb pieces are almost orange, rather than the normal golden colour, and the orange flavouring within them erupts to combine with the smoothness of the chocolate. Of course, the honeycomb pieces add a crisp texture to the otherwise smooth segment and a sweetness, which combines beautifully with the orange flavouring. Terry?s are not stingy with the honeycomb either. The segment is crammed with them, ensuring that each nibble is littered with honeycomb. Delicious.

The final segment in the tub is covered with a light blue wrapper, and is a solid crescent formed from milk chocolate. The base of the segment is totally different from those of the preceding segments though. This Segsation has a knobbly feel to its underside, and what looks to be like small pieces of biscuit cover the base. Looks are deceiving however, as on biting into the chocolate, it is apparent that the biscuit pieces are actually small pieces of crisped rice and are not in the base, they are everywhere! The pieces of puffed rice add a crispy texture to the chocolate, and if sucked and savoured on the tongue, the chocolate melts away leaving a cluster o
f puffed rice that is flavoured with orange. The orange flavour does not appear to be as strong in this segment, and instead the taste of the chocolate appears more prominent, giving the segment a milkiness, not present in the others. Scrumptious.

Each 100g serving of Segsations provides the consumer with 523kcal and 28.7g of fat, leaving us all in no doubt that Segsations will not help with a calorie controlled diet. However, the segments are truly scrumptious and their sheer moreishness ensure that the consumer will not be able to stop at just one segment.

All of the segments have the Terry?s name stamped on their smooth surfaces, and the thicker edges have a pretty circular pattern stamped onto them giving them a slightly rough texture. It is a testament to the popularity of Terry?s Orange Flavoured Chocolate that real orange oil is used in their manufacture, no doubt why the Segsations taste so utterly irresistible. There is nothing worse than biting into a chocolate and finding that the flavouring used is artificial, but biting into a Segsation is an immensely pleasurable experience and one that I will be repeating on a regular basis.

Terry?s have perfected the recipe for orange flavoured chocolate. Their chocolate is not overly creamy, leaving the orange oil to provide the prominent flavour, thus making the Segments a pleasant treat, and not one that will leave the consumer feeling slightly sick. The Segsations disappeared very quickly over the holiday period, and proved immensely popular with all of our family members, the five varieties within ensuring that there is a segment to suit everybody?s taste. I would thoroughly recommend the Segsations to any lover of Terry?s Chocolate orange and may all your experiences be orangey ones.
