Advantages: Chocolate

Disadvantages: not as nice as the orange

So what are Terrys Chocolate Orange Segsations?

We all know the Terrys Chocolate Orange, an orange shaped chocolate that you have to through against the wall to be able to separate the segments and taste all gorgeous and orangey. Well Terrys, possibly out of fear of being sued for household repairs, have decided to make things easy for us and provide a great big box, 672g to be precise of individually wrapped small orange segments.

Of course having each little segment wrapped up means that you can be extra clever and put different varieties in there, or in Terrys own words ‘A variety of 5 irresistible taste experiences’. So this is the perfect point to move onto the next question:

What are these irresistible taste experiences?

For easy identification Terry very kindly has wrapped them in different wrappings so I’ll describe each one in turn.

1. Dark blue wrapping, this is the one that we have all eaten and enjoyed since we were knee high to a grasshopper. It is the milk chocolate orange segment. Has to be everybody’s favourite. They are considerable smaller than the big orange segments about 1.5” in length.
2. Light orange wrapping. This one is frankly weird, it is milk chocolate orange but for some reason they decided to try and go crunchy so added bits of honeycomb, and I don’t think it really works. Yes the first time you try them it is nice, but you spend the next 15 minutes pulling bits of honeycomb out of your teeth. However did it stop me trying another one, me not eating chocolate, when hell freezes over!
3. Red wrapping. I love dark chocolate and Terry’s dark choccie orange has always been a favourite BUT this does not work, ok its chocolate, so I’ll eat it, but its milk chocolate with a single layer of dark chocolate. Feel like I’ve been diddled.
4. Light blue wrapping. They’re trying to go crunchy again and have added a layer of rice crispies into the milk chocolate orange. If I win the lottery, then I will waste money making chocolate orange rice crispy cakes, until then leave the crispies out. But yes, you’ve guessed it, doesn’t stop me eating them.
5. White wrapping. Now doesn’t take a brain surgeon to realise this is going to be white chocolate. The orange in this does make it a bit sickly but its still chocolate orange isn’t it.

So they take all of these segments and plonk them into a great big plastic container beautifully marketed in time for Christmas. Well that was the plan, but we had to open them because we needed something for sandwich boxes and of course once opened, they’re not even going to last until Halloween.

The taste of chocolate orange is somewhat unique, there is a very strong orangey smell the second you open the box and this does come through in the taste. But how much orange is in there? According to the ingredients, unless there is a strange word for orange that I’m not currently aware of the word orange does not appear in the list at all. There is however a word ‘flavouring’ which could hide a multitude of sins.

Now of course the essential part of the review, will they make you fat? Oh yes, she says in Churchill nodding dog fashion. Calories 528 per 100g yikes. So, no, I can’t afford it from a calorie point of view and £5.98 from a bank balance point of view is not too bad but certainly not the best value packet on the shelf.

Would I buy them again, I honestly don’t know, I would certainly buy the regular oranges but for a big box I think I’ll stick with my old favourite of Roses.

But the question I really want to know the answer to is, who is this Terry bloke anyway?

Thank you for reading.
