Advantages: Orangey, Chocolatey, ain't that enough?
Disadvantages: Can be dangerous in the wrong hands!
I can remember my first my first experience with a Chocolate Orange. It was many, many years ago and like most people I guess? Father Christmas bought it for me. Unfortunately he left me with the Chocolate orange but failed to explain what it was for. Hence I threw it at my brother (I was only small!) Tears followed, it was confiscated, and my brother got a few extra days off school and a large lump on the forehead! When I finally got it back, a new door opened and my world become just that little bit better, so what's it all about then? I guess most people associate the product with Dawn French, the very large lady on television with a chocolate addiction.Well, Lenny Henry's wife Dawn, is liable to put you off it a bit. Do you really want to be reminded of what you will look like if you eat too many? No I think not. So Mrs Henry, get off the television and leave my Chocolate orange alone, ok! It is very fattening, so if you are watching your weight, stop reading?.. wait for it?. Ok stop reading now. Still here? Then I will assume that you are all slim people from now on, or fat people that just don't care (like me!) So on to the product itself?. Well as far as I know, it comes in plain or milk chocolate, although I think they made a limited "snowball" version consisting of white chocolate. I cannot confirm this as even though I searched high and low over the Christmas period, I just couldn't find one (maybe they should have called it the abominable snowball!) Anyway, my girlfriend made me search for it and as always I let her down (Ferrero Rocher softened the blow though!) There are two things that really distinguish the humble Chocolate Orange from the usual everyday chocolate. It has a great orange taste to it and well it's shaped like an orange (wrapped in orange foil). There is a flaky core in the middle surrounded by those great tasting chocolate segments that are just th
e right thickness to sink your teeth into without losing any (teeth that is!) Nice crunch to them too! There are also two things to remember when looking after this product. Firstly, try not to hold it too much in your hands as this will melt the chocolate together and it will turn into a solid chocolate ball (so forget the juggling act, however tempting it may be!). Why is this a bad thing? Well have you ever tried fitting a whole orange in your mouth in one go? If you have and you can then there is no problem (and you have an extremely large cakehole!) No, then don't try it, you will probably just choke or be unable to speak until it melts. The second thing, try not to let it get too cold. Yes I know some people like to put their chocolate in the fridge (philistines) but this will make it hard to crack your orange (not that they ever open nice and evenly as they do in the adverts!). I find room temperature is probably best. The price well depending where you go, about £1 sterling and personally I think that's a bargain. I have tried the plain chocolate orange but I'm afraid it just doesn't taste right to me. Go for he milk chocolate one (I do like plain chocolate just not in this orangy state!) I must add that you can get chocolate orange bars, which are somewhat smaller and strangely enough shaped like a bar. These are quite handy if you get a craving but are trying not to be so much of a fat bloater. They are also handy if you need to be careful with your cash as they sell for around 40 pence. There is also a large bucket of Chocolate orange slices, it costs £££'s and should come with mega calorie warning (buy it and sacriface going up one size in clothes!) Product comparisons? Well there really is nothing quite like it. Although being in the same sort of price bracket as After eight mints I guess you could opt for them. But of course After eight mints taste of mint chocolate! Either
one of them make a nice cheap gift when you want to make someone smile or just feel like treating yourself! Oh and I refuse to list the ingredients as it is just too boring. Look at a box if you want to know that! .

- 21/03/02 Genius. Pure Genius. It's an orange, but it's made of chocolate. Bloody Brilliant! I'm still waiting for Terry's to extend the range. The chocolate passion fruit for Valentines? Maybe a giant chocolate strawberry for Wimbledon fortnight? You could make a fortune! |
