Advantages: Perfect combo of dark chocolate and orange oil

Disadvantages: Pass me a hammer...

Sat here on the desk in front of me is my biggest weakness in life. Ok, I will admit that any chocolate is one of the greatest inventions known to mankind; but in the face of this particular indulgence I am completely, totally and utterly defenceless.

The first time I had the delight of sampling this foil wrapped extravagance was when I around ten years of age, I think. My Dad, sorry Santa, had bought my brother and myself the milk chocolate version apiece and himself the dark chocolate one. After a fit of pure chocolate driven insanity during which I ate not only some of my own but most of my fathers, something peculiar happened. Santa from that day onwards only put a dark chocolate orange in my stocking each year; very probably as a precautionary measure least his own should again vanish as if by magic!

Twenty-five years on and last Christmas?s offering is, as I said in front of me as I type. Quite how it has survived intact this far is in part down to sheer will power but more to do with the fact that each year I like to save the best until last! It is indeed the dark chocolate one and refreshingly if not unusually the product remains unchanged despite the passage of time. Maybe there?s been the odd tweak here and there in the packaging but it truly remains virtually untainted from the first one I received if my memory serves me correctly.

The bright orange foil wrapping the chocolate visible through the little clear plastic window and the writing on the box still clashes a little viciously with the bright red of the packaging but for that I can forgive Terrys. Once opened this little beauty will not be around long enough for colour combinations to matter. Eye-catching and simplistic in design the whole thing is now Im sure to countless millions unmistakable which is I guess why they havent played around with the packaging or details.

For the purposes of good opinionating only I shall now carefully open this delectation a
nd sample the delights within. The orange smell hits as soon as the box is opened and thats before Ive retrieved the spherical extravagance from the shaped plastic inserts which protect it. I have no idea why Terry?s see the need for these apart from making the packaging easier. I doubt any of these would get broken during transit?

Which brings me neatly to my next point. Allow me to read now from the back of the box if I may. Simply tap and unwrap it says. Theres about as much chance of a Terrys chocolate orange falling into its constituent segments with a mere tap as there is of the Pope quitting the Vatican and setting up a brothel. Clearly the marketing man who thought of that one had never been introduced to one of these little beauties; indeed in my mind there is the distinct thought that he had never been in the same room as one or maybe he just wasnt on the same planet as the rest of us?

So how do I break mine? I find the kitchen floor to be effective; as in throwing the chocolate orange at it, straight down with an over arm bowling style. Banging this one on the desk has proved to be totally ineffectual so excuse me for a minute whilst I go for a spot of orange tossing? Hubby was scared the first time he saw me do this, he being uninitiated in the ways of getting a Terrys orange to co operate. He swore it would end up in tiny little pieces. The result then, as now is that even doing something as drastic as pelting it at concrete surfaces only results in around half of the segments separating from each other.

Pealing off the little sticker that holds the foil firmly in place the overpowering aroma hits my nostrils and Im salivating. The slightly bitter scent of chocolate mixed with orange is overwhelming and its simply divine and heavenly. Each of the twenty segments is formed just like you?d find in a real orange and marked to resemble citrus flesh. These segments are formed around a central core again mimicking natures own. I hav
e to say though, Ive never had an orange yet that tasted this good?!

The taste is like music to my taste buds. The unbeatable combination of orange and chocolate is certainly something that Terrys excel at. The slightly bitter dark chocolate combines perfectly with the real orange oil and despite being plain chocolate this has a very creamy mouth-feel. Incredibly moreish in aroma, taste and texture this is the one confectionary product that I can eat in its entirety in one sitting whilst blissfully ignoring the countless calories I am ingesting. Just sitting here and writing this and purely for the accuracy of this opinion, seven pieces have already accidentally fallen prey to my digestive system. I think I can safely say that the rest will surely and swiftly follow!

Made by Terrys Suchard in York and weighing in at 175g you can get your own for anywhere between £1.70 and £2.30. I said GET YOUR OWN?stop drooling over mine!

Not my favourite chocolate, but super review... not sure if the raspberry one sounds too appetising though...

Good op, but I really don't like chocolate. I'm sweet enough(hmmm....)
Howe ver, the missus seems to be stuffing one of these down her neck quite often, so I guess they are nice!

How wonderful it is to read a review from someone who enjoys the dark chocolate one too!! What always gets me about these is on the adverts they used to just 'float' open - but in reality - they need a bloody good bashing - I've lobbed mine at the kitchen floor a few times too!
