Advantages: Tasty, moreish, crispy
Disadvantages: Burn easily in the toaster
A few weeks ago I popped into Tesco after work and came across a packet of croissants. But not just any old packet of croissants...No! The packet in question contained four 'Toasting Croissants'. Never heard of them? Well neither had I, but then again, they are a new line, recently introduced into larger Tesco stores.
The whole concept of toasting croissants appealed to me straight away. You can pop bread in the toaster so why not croissants..? Of course, traditional croissants would not fit in a standard toaster, but Tesco have come up with the ingenious idea of making them square-shaped to fit precisely this purpose. I always find that croissants are best served warm, but warming them in the oven can be time-consuming and I do not have time for this first thing in the morning. But 'Toasting Croissants' are not only quick to prepare, but also incredibly tasty.
I am not going to waste time describing the packaging because you can see what it looks like from the picture above. However, I will quickly tell you a bit about the packet's contents. Inside, you'll find four square-shaped croissants of around 8cm in length. Like ordinary croissants, they are soft, flaky and a nice golden brown colour. However, because of their shape, these are flat and not as intricately designed as real croissants.
According to the back of the packet, there are two ways to toast the croissants. You can either grill them on a medium heat for two minutes, turning once, or pop them in a toaster and toast on a low heat. Please note that they burn very easily in a toaster, so make sure you use a low setting. The croissants are not suitable for microwave cooking, however. I always choose to toast the croissants using the toaster as this is much quicker and produces croissants which are hot and crunchy. All you need then is a dollop of jam and a nice cup of tea or coffee!
I usually eat these croissants for breakfast. I love the mouthwatering buttery aroma which wafts up after toasting. It is a comforting, pleasant smell which instantly makes you feel hungry.
Because of their flaky exterior, the croissants become nice and crispy on the outside after toasting. They seem more delicate than normal croissants as a result. Inside, the pastry-like interior is pleasantly moist and almost spongey in texture - not at all soggy like some croissants can be. The inside has a pleasant buttery flavour, which when combined with the toasted/slightly burnt exterior and sweetness of the jam, makes for a wonderfully diverse taste experience.
The nutritional values are clearly displayed on the front of the packet. Each croissant contains 10.6g of fat, 190 calories and a mere 0.5g of salt. They are also suitable for vegetarians, as shown by the V on the front. On the back, a bright pink strip draws your attention to the 'allergy advice'. This tells us that the croissants contain milk, wheat, gluten and egg.
Toasting Croissants currently sell for 79p and are available in Tesco Extra stores. I have not seen them in smaller stores yet though. 79p seems like quite a good price for four individual croissants, although this is still more than a packet of four ordinary all butter croissants, which cost 54p.
Overall, I am very impressed by these croissants and I can honestly say that I am a convert, as they are nicer and easier to prepare than normal croissants.
If you like croissants, give these a try sometime.
