Advantages: fairly big, chocolatey, long expiry dates

Disadvantages: usual chocolatey unhealthiness

This is, as the name would suggest, a 'big' chocolate cake; or, at least, it seems huge in size to me. Perhaps it's a little more useful to talk of its servings, of which there are twelve. This is a celebratory cake within my family so, as it was my birthday recently, its presence in the household returned.

I guess I can tell you right here and now that this is, by no means, a healthy cake (although, what cake truly is?). Each serving of 1/12 contains 310 calories, 29g of sugar 13.5g of fat, 5.1g of saturates and 0.8g of salt. That's pretty much a third of your guideline daily amount of sugar and saturates gone right there in one single slice of cake. It's not all bad though; that slice of cake is not only delicious, but a pretty hefty portion also. Anyway, it's suitable for vegetarians and contains no artificial flavours or colours and has the usual allergy advice noting that it contains milk, wheat, gluten, egg and soya...but the thing that really stands out for me with this cake is that the dates are extremely long, so there's no real need to pig out at the sake of avoiding waste. The expiry date for the one I bought was a little over two weeks, so I only ate a small slice every so often as a treat (and to extend the feel-good); although, admittedly, my family weren't so restraining!

Anyway, past the nutritional factor, it's essentially a cake. A chocolate cake. It's not extravagantly different than any other chocolate cake, to be perfectly honest, but it's a great cake nonetheless and about ten times bigger. The box describes it as "chocolate sponge cake layered and topped with chocolate buttercream, and decorated with marbled chocolate curls". I've never liked chocolate buttercream; it's always been something that put me off a little, but in this cake it's done fantastically. It's not overpowering in taste, but instead just compliments the sponge nicely enough. The sponge is exceptionally soft, pleasingly moist and keeps well through the long dates if necessary, for I know I just ate the last slice of cake and it still tasted pretty great, although obviously it had lost a little of the sponginess in storage. I didn't even keep it in an airtight container as is suggested, either; I merely left it in the box pushed against other contents of the larder.

Like the body of the cake, the chocolate marble curls are also excellent. The display picture on the box is a little deceiving in that it displays the curls completely overwhelming the cake; such is not the case, there are a lot of them, but it's certainly not full coverage. I actually find this a benefit, though, since it's a little nice to have a break of them amidst eating. The curls are of white and milk chocolate and there's a nice variety of shapes in them. I actually found one that was about seven curls somehow having become one, which was a tad odd but nice. I'm a particular fan of the white chocolate, and it was with the greatest pain that I pulled back from picking them all off upon the cake's initial opening.

Overall, I'd certainly recommend this cake and perhaps more so than usual as currently there's £2 off at Tesco till the 17th of June. I'll probably get another one due to such...price reductions count as an occasion, right?

Summary: Chocolatey goodness.
