Advantages: Excellent value for money, great taste.

Disadvantages: Onion breath.....never attractive!

Everyone in our house takes packed lunches - to school, college, work, wherever.......lunches need to be filling, they need to be healthy, and they need to be reasonably priced.....and it is very easy to buy the same old lunchbox components every week.

I have to admit I am not overly adventurous in the packed lunch department. Sandwiches form the mainstay of lunchtime, and fillings comprise generally of ham, pate, cheese, and tuna.....or if we are having a "skint week", jam, marmite, and chocolate spread. Alternatively pasta and couscous dishes, make regular appearances at lunchtime (often leftovers from the previous night's meal).

I try not to buy convenience food - it generally works out more expensive. Why buy prepacked tuna and mayonnaise, for example, when a tin of tuna mixed with a bit of mayonnaise at home takes just a few minutes, and costs a third of the shop bought version?

However, I was given a tub of Tesco Cheese and Onion sandwich filler by someone who had bought it and wasn't going to use it. So, of course I was happy to give "free food" a go.....and have been pleasantly surprised.

The tub is a different design from the one above (which is an old picture) but it is obvious from the tub that it is Cheese & Onion filler. The weight is 250grammes and they are 2 tubs for £2.50 - so £1.25 a tub (for anyone reading this late at night whose maths brain has gone to sleep!).

The tub doesn't look as though it will do more than one or two sandwiches - making £1.25 a tub quite expensive. After all, you can go to the sandwich shop or deli and get a sarnie made up for not much more than that.....with no effort!

But, the reality is very different. I like a chunky sandwich - I like to be able to taste the filling, not just know it is in there! My husband says I am too generous with my fillings, but there we are - the point is, that I am not stingy with my portions......and yet I still get a good 5 or 6 sandwiches (ie 5 or 6 lots of 2 slices of bread) of generously filled sandwiches out of this one pot! Fantastic!

So, if you get five sandwiches out of this tub, that makes it just 25p a go......I am liking this sandwich filler more and more!

But of course, value for money is worth nothing if the product doesn't taste nice.

This is cheese & onion - and yes you can definitely taste the onion, so if you don't like onion much, don't buy this.

But I do! So on we go!

This is cheddar cheese, onion, and spring onion, in mayonnaise. The mayonnaise makes up 48% of the product, which sounds an awful lot, and may lead you to thinking you are going to have no flavour to this. But there is also 40% cheddar cheese - of which over half is mature - so you get a really good taste of cheese. The cheese is coarsely grated, so you get a good amount of "chunk" without it being difficult to spread.

The onion element comprises 7% white onion and 4.5% spring onion - so over 11% is onion.......that leads to a strong flavour of onion, so as mentioned above, if you are not that keen on onion, give this one a miss.

For those of you doing the maths, we are up to 99 and a bit % from the basic ingredients - mayo, cheese and onion. The remaining fraction of a percent is dijon mustard. Nice and simple.

This is suitable for vegetarians, and generally, once opened it should be used within a couple of days.

So, all in all, we have here a deliciously flavourful sandwich filling, easy to spread, substantial in texture, suitable for even the hungriest of lunch eaters, and at a very reasonable price. It doesn't seem worth me getting my cheese grater out now that I have been presented with something like this, and I will definitely be buying it myself in the future.

For the perfect sandwich, my tip is to add slices of really ripe tomato.....just delish!

Summary: Might be worth keeping a toothbrush at work to get rid of the onion breath!
