Advantages: Good value for money, the little cherry on top yum ! !
Disadvantages: Can be a little too sweet & sickly & can only be brought in Tescos
I have never really been a puddings person since I started eating more sensibly. When I was younger I didn't think twice about eating 6 full sized chocolate éclairs in one go washed down by a couple of cans of sugary coca cola. These days I am more worried about what I eat and tend not to go for puddings in case I eat too much of a nice thing.
On Monday I have dinner at my grandmas and this is a very weak time for me as she only ever cooks the fattiest (obviously the nicest) food and we always have to have a pudding. Usually I am really good and choose either fruit or some sort of trifle, which is small, but after keep spotting the cherry bakewells in Tesco I simply couldn't resist and now I am regretting it!
HOW MUCH and WHERE FROM?
You buy Tescos own Cherry bakewells in pack of 6's for 73p. You can get cherry bakewells at other shops and supermarkets but not these because they are Tesco's own. The main brands you can get are Mr Kipling and Weight Watcher which come out at about £1 a box and taste exactly the same so the Tesco's own are really good value for money.
You can't miss the box on the shelves in Tesvo it is big red and has the lovely cakes on the front making it very enticing.
THE CAKES
You get 6 round medium sized cakes in all each one sits in its very own silver case. The short crust pastry is quite thick and crumbly around the edges. The fondant covering is also very soft but not sticky unlike other cakes with fondant covering. Some people who have sweet teeth may find the cakes too small but I think the majority of people will think they are just right or a little bit too big even for some because they can be a little bit sickly because the almond sponge and raspberry filling are very sweet but very Moorish at the same time.
THE AROMA
At first you cant really smell a lot on the cake until you get really close and the bottom smells very yummy indeed. The almond sponge has a very distinctive smell and soon draws you in to the kill at speed!
Once you have taken a bite out of the cake it smell quite fruity but not very much of raspberry, more like strawberry. The top doesn't really smell it just has the smell of fondant which I cannot describe its just plain.
THE TASTE TEST
The first bite out of a cherry bakewell is heaven whatever brand they are and Tesco's own live well up to expectations. At first the pastry feels very thick and stodgy and tends to get everywhere so its best to hold the tin case under your mouth to catch all the crumbling pieces. Once you get a full taste your taste buds go wild the fondant topping is quite a thin layer so your teeth don't feel to sweet and there is only a small amount of raspberry flavour filling just giving you that fruity feeling. The almond flavoured sponge is nice and light with a mild aroma of almond, which I love. The almond really blends the tastes together combining a really soft and sweet taste. The best part is the centre the half cherry! My favourite taste in the whole world glace cherries. The top is blessed with a half glace cherry perfect for popping in your mouth at the end of scoffing the cake. I always save the cherry till last and always eat around it. The cherry always sticks to the fondant so you get a very sweet piece of cake, which isn't too bad considering the whole cake sounds quite sweet. The cherry part is probably the sickliest part yet nicest overall all taste.
AFTERWARDS
Once you have polished one cake off I don't tend to fancy another one for about another 10 mins! They are very sweet but have that addiction factor. They are the sort of cakes you sit looking at and think it would just be wrong not to eat the lot so unless you are a strong person don't get these cake or you are in danger of piling on the pounds. I think these cakes should carry a warning sticker "WARNING addictive to anyone who likes anything sweet!"
REALLY ??
Ah not really but with all sweet things they are ok in moderation. Each little cake contains 165 calories out of your 2000 a day it may not seem like a lot in comparison to 2000c but it takes me 10 minutes to burn one of these babies off on my exercise bike yet only 10 seconds to devour one so you can imagine if you eat half a packet of these you have already had a quarter of your daily allowance of calories and that isn't including you drinks, snacks and 3 meals how scary is that!
WHO SHOULDN'T EAT THESE
Cherry Bakewell tarts contain milk, wheat, gluten and egg so if you are a celiac or have intolerance to any of these foods these aren't the cakes for you. The also contain traces of nut so if you have any nut allergies steer clear of these. For anyone who is on a diet or is trying to eat healthy should also avoid these cakes unless they want to give up immediately.
Summary: Yum
