Tesco Chicken and Cashew Nuts (350g)
I bought this meal from Tesco mainly because of the half price offer; I paid £1.44 only for it. It's a yummy Chinese meal, and as is written on the cover it's "ideal for Chinese New Year - year of the rat 7th February 2008." I find this sweet, but it's not the reason why I bought it really. I love Chicken and cashews, and also Chinese meals are awesome at times; they use such a unique mixture of flavours, and wonderful vegetables that I'm always interested in trying.
I took a look at the meal before buying it by removing the cardboard cover a little. The meal comes in the usual black microwavable tub that is used in almost all Tesco's ready meals, except that there's a small separated section where the cashew nuts are put. This is because you have to peel the film lid and take the cashews out before you heat the chicken in the microwave for 4 ½ minutes. I did that and enjoyed the good smell of this dish for some time, then I mixed the cashews with the rest.
In a word, I loved this meal; it contains 36% chicken breast pieces of large size, which seems to be a very satisfying amount. The kind of vegetables used in it, like sweet corn and choi sum, etc.., are so yummy. And the crunchy slices of chestnut, along with the cashews, are a wonderful addition. However, the amount of cashew nuts is no more than 3% of the 350g, that is no more than 10.5g in case you were wondering. This does not seem to be a downside, but I just don't want you to have high expectations. The sauce used in this meal is mainly a mixture of Soy sauce and sesame oil, so it does not only have a nice texture, but it's yummy as well.
Although this meal does not have rice with it, yet it is definitely filling, and it gives no more than 344 calories. Surprisingly, the allergy advice on it is shorter than I expected: it contains sesame seeds (I had no idea this kind of allergy exists), wheat, gluten, Soya, cashew nuts and possible traces of other nuts.
The verdict? I think buying things half price or two for one is such a smart idea. They make you try it, have you hooked, and then make you pay the full price. Well, Tesco, you win, I will buy this meal again... and again. I think it's perfect; the generous amount of big chicken pieces, the mixture of vegetables, the texture of the soy and sesame sauce, and the delicious cashews. One last thing, though, I feel that the microwavable tub which Tesco use in their meals is so thin that carrying it is somewhat a problem at times. If using such lousy tubs is better for the environment, then it's ok, but if it is just used by them to save money, I hope they replace it with a thicker transparent tub.
Summary: Happy New Chinese Year, everyone!
