Advantages: Taste great, quick and easy to make, cheap

Disadvantages: One is never enough!

I have a sweet tooth and often in an evening or on a Saturday afternoon I feel I would like a cake or a biscuit with my cup of tea. If I don't have anything in the house it means popping out to our local coffee-shop and buying one of their delicious chocolate brownies or traybakes but as nice as this is its also quite expensive. Although I love baking sometimes I don't have any eggs in the house or just want something quickly so whilst doing the online shopping recently and having read a few reviews of cake mixes I thought I would maybe try one. I have never bought a cake or biscuit mix before so I bought a couple of different ones to give them a try. One of the mixes I bought was the Tesco Chocolate Chip Cookie Mix which at 77p seemed very good value for money.

It didn't take long until my husband and I felt the need for something to eat and so we brought out the Tesco Choc Chip Cookie Mix that I had bought. The product comes in a purple cardboard box with a nice big picture of some lovely choc chip cookies on the front. The nutritional information is displayed clearly on the front and there is also a symbol to show that they are suitable for vegetarians. In small writing under the label it states that you just add butter. I bought the cookie mix 2 weeks ago and the best before date is Jun 09 so this is a product that you can keep in your cupboard for a long time should you have the willpower not to use it!

Inside the box is a packet with all the mixture in. The instructions to make the cookies are really quite simple. You preheat your oven to 180oC or Gas Mark 4. Empty the contents of the packet into a bowl and add 25g of softened butter and 1-2 tablespoons of cold water. I found I needed both tablespoons of water. Mix the ingredients until it forms a non-sticky dough, I started with a spoon and then used my hands to press it together to make the dough. You then can divide the dough into 6 pieces and form into balls. I found it easier to divide the mixture into 8 pieces so I made 8 slightly smaller cookies. You can then place the balls onto a greased baking tray, however I use silicone trays which don't need greasing. Tap the ball down to form a disc shape and keep them about 5cm apart, I needed to use two trays to do this. Pop them in the oven for 10-12 minutes they should go slightly golden around the edges. Remove from oven and leave to cool slightly, if you try to move them two early they will break as they are too soft.

I found these cookies really quick and easy to make. I make cookies quite often but the fact that you didn't have to weigh the ingredients or chop the chocolate into pieces made these cookies very quick to make. There is also not much washing up simply a bowl and spoon and the baking trays. The mixture made 8 good sized cookies. Each cookie had a good amount of chocolate chips in them. The cookies tasted fantastic, I was really surprised at how good they tasted. They had a lovely firm crisp edge as you bite into it but then inside it was much softer with a slight chew to it. There were plenty of choc chips so you got some with each bite. We had 2 with our cup of tea and popped the rest into a box with a lid and they kept well till the next day when we polished them off. I thought these cookies tasted every bit as good as a homemade cookie but with a lot less hassle. For me they were very good value for money as I got 8 cookies for less than the price of what I would have had to pay for 1 piece of cake had I gone to my local shop.

You could probably make the cookies even more exciting if you liked by adding some chopped walnuts or mix in some white choc chips as well. But for me these cookies are great just the way they are. I have another box of mix waiting in the cupboard just incase I have some unexpected guests or if I just feel eating a cookie. I would recommend these to you I never thought I would buy cake mixes but I was pleasantly surprised and will be buying this again.

For those of you who are interested in the nutritional values these are the numbers based on one cookie if you use the dough to make a total of 6 cookies. One cookie is 50g.
