Advantages: it's a dessert
Disadvantages: overly sweet top, odd texture to the cheese part, not enough brownie pieces
Having a bit of a sweet tooth and a bit of a chocoholic I decided to give these a go. There are slightly different to the picture shown as they no longer have the chocolate curls on the top. These cost me £1.90 for two rather small slices of cheesecake.
What do they consist of?
They have the usual parts you would expect a cheesecake to have. There is the biscuit base, made from a chocolaty digestive biscuit the layer of the cheese filling and topped with a thin layer of chocolate sauce. The cheese layer has a small amount of what is supposed to be chocolate brownies in it.
The good news/bad news bit!
Nutritional info (per slice)
Energy - 455 Kcal
Sugar - 29.8g
Fat - 30g (sat 16.6g)
Salt - 0.7g
So high in fat and sugar but as a once in a while buy it isn't too bad.
They are suitable for vegetarians but they may contain nut traces
Taste and smell?
There is a faint smell of chocolate to the cheesecake but there is nothing to write home about on this front. The chocolate sauce was only a very thin layer which was rather disappointing. However, if you are looking for a rich chocolate taste you will be very disappointed. The chocolate taste was noticeable but that was about it. The sauce was overly sweet and I felt rather sticky.
The actual cheese layer well again nothing special here. The texture was rather odd for a cheesecake. It was heavy and whilst not exactly grainy it was I suppose a bit 'rough' as if it had not been beaten for long enough. Even here the chocolate taste was distinctly absent. For me there was a strange slightly acidic taste to this part. This I can only put down to the inclusion of soured cream in the recipe.
There was a bit of chocolate brownie in the cheese layer and this was perhaps the best part of it. The brownie piece was fairly soft and had a good chocolate taste to it. For me there could have been more of these.
The base for me was perhaps a bit too thick but it does hold up well and was fairly crumbly and not overly hard. It had an interesting combination of a chocolaty taste with the butteriness of the biscuit its self. The base did have a strange aftertaste which I can only describe as if the base had 'caught' on the base of the pan as it was being made. I wouldn't exactly call it burnt but it was going in that direction.
For the second slice which I ate the following day I left it to get to room temperature for about 30 min before eating it. Whilst this did improve the texture to the extent that some of the roughness had gone the actual taste did not change at all.
For me the amount you get in each slice is slightly insubstantial for the amount of calories that it contains. Simply by increasing the amount of cocoa and reducing the sugar content would not only improve the taste but also drop the calories so you can have more of it.
Would I buy them again?
In answer no I probably would not, there are better chocolate cheesecakes out there and I would rather pay a bit more for a dessert I would enjoy more than to buy a cheaper one I'm not a fan of. Either that or I'll make my own. For me they would be better served getting rid of the cheesecake part and just sell the brownie pieces as these were the only praiseworthy part of this.
Summary: rather disappointing, Think I'll stick to making my own

- 16/08/09 So many bought desserts have far too much sugar in them, I find.
I often use less sugar when baking aswell. X |
