Tesco caterpillar cake
It was one of the school childrens birthdays today and their mum sent in a cake for us all to celebrate. It was a chocolate caterpillar cake from tesco.
Tesco have been producing this cake design for several years now it seems to be a favourite.
The cake cost £4.99 not too expensive really for shop made cakes. This cake can easily be found in the cake section at tescos in a blue and green rectangular box with flowers and caterpillar picture printed on it.
We unwrapped the cake and it was not very big the pkt suggests enough for 12 servings. . The children all sat round the break time table.
The cake is a chocolate Swiss roll covered in a rippled milk chocolate and some piped lines of darker chocolate. Then a smattering of smarties /or smartie look-alikes are stuck onto the chocolate covering. As well as these there are some chocolate iced decorations. This caterpillar has a big smiley icing face at one end and he stands on 6 huge green boots, these are made of green icing.
This cake is about the size of a standard Swiss roll chocolate log cake. We have 16 children most of our children are poor eaters and have only the tiniest piece there was just enough for a taste of cake for about 13 of them. 1 child is unable to eat solid food they have a gastronomy (tube fed through stomach.) One has an egg intolerance one has a dairy and gluten intolerance, he gets really high if he eats any. This cake contains egg, wheat, Soya, gluten and a possibility of a trace of nuts. At school we always have to read the ingredients before we give anything to the children.
There are 275 cals in this cake. So make mine a small piece, I did actually get a crumb or two.
It smelt very chocolaty, and tasted very rich and sweet, the sponge was quite light and tasty. There is a chocolate fondant cream filling this is quite sweet but not over sweet. The chocolate coating is quite brittle as it cracked when it was cut this was a nice creamy chocolate, tasty. I did only have a tiny piece of cake and I think a small piece is enough as it is quite sweet and chocolaty. The children who ate it seemed to be happy with the cake and we got lots of smiles.
So Tescos you have a winner there a cake that is a fair price and an attractive character for children. The only thing that would beat it would be to make my own, but Swiss rolls are not easy to make, it would be cheaper to use a bought Swiss roll and cover it in butter icing and add a few smarties ice a face. I have made caterpillar cakes before but yes I would recommend this caterpillar cake from Tesco for your children’s party.
