Advantages: Tastes lovely, slices well, good quality

Disadvantages: -------------

It was my granddaughters first birthday on Sunday and even though my daughter had ordered her a spectacular bake from the bakery I decided to pop into Tesco and buy a Caterpillar Cake as I remember my older granddaughters love this chocolate cake.

These cakes have been around for a long time because a caterpillar shape is perfect for a childrens birthday cake which has to be sliced into perfectly equal slices to avoid arguements and spats between the guests.

The Caterpillar cake comes in a green box that is decorated to look like the sort of place where a real caterpillar would live. Opening the box you'll see the cake sitting on a silvery cake base and it looks very appetising and will definitely appeal to children of all ages. The caterpillar is chocolate and so is a lovely rich brown colour with a bright happy face made of a circle of green icing at one end.

It is very easy to slice but make sure you use a sharp knife as the chocolate coating breaks sometimes and this can spoil the look of an otherwise perfect circle of cake.

The cake is made of chocolate sponge cake with chocolate butter cream running through it just like a Swiss Roll, a cross section of the cake looks lovely because the butter cream has been fitted into the cake in a tube way so you can see the outer circle of sponge, then the butter cream and then another section of cake.

The outside of the Caterpillar cake is covered in chocolate icing which is quite soft but still not quite soft enough to avoid the breaking I mentioned earlier. It definitely tastes like proper chocolate and is very sweet and quite sickly with a slightly gritty sugary texture. The caterillar also has a generous sprinking of Smarties on his back which are stuck well so that they are still on the cake when you come to cut it, rather than just covering the cake base.

When eaten together this cake is a delight and is a very high quality product considering it is aimed at under 5 year olds. As a whole it is intensely chocolatey and it is obvious that only the best ingredients have been used based on taste alone. The sponge is light and moist and it compliments the butter cream beautifully because the heaviness of the cream is countered by the fluffiness of the sponge.

It keeps its texture and shape well even when served with hot custard or ice cream, which is good because I find supermarket-bought cakes usually end up mushy and shapeless after a soaking of cream or custard. It can be eaten with a fork or as a finger food because it isn't too crumbly and doesn't fall to bits as soon as it leaves the plate.

All the children enjoyed their slice of Caterpillar cake, with some of them preferring this £4.99 cake to the one my daughter had painstakingly designed and ordered which cost over £30. Well, they do say Keep It Simple Stupid!

Summary: A lovely accompaniment to your childs birthday party.
