Once a week we have a family night that involves my children choosing a DVD and some yummy treats to eat whilst watching. A few weeks ago we were in Tescos to see what unhealthy but yummy food we could buy. My children both wanted ice cream, unusal they should both agree!

We looked along the freezer cabinet and my son was attracted by the Carte d’or selection, then I noticed Tescos own brand of ice cream, looking remarkably similar to Carte D’or but with a lower price tag! I had never bought Tesco own brand ice cream before but was willing to give it a try. There were several tempting flavours on offer including, caramella, cherryicious, chocolatino, fruits of the forest, tiramisu and vanilla. The ice cream costs £1.73 for a 1-litre tub, or 2 tubs for £3.00. This compares well with Carte D’or selling at £2.79 for a 1-litre tub. As I was feeling generous (and greedy)! I agreed to buy 2 tubs. My oldest son choose caramella and my youngest, after lots of mind changing went for the cherry version.

The ice cream comes in a clear plastic rectangular tub with rounded corners, exactly the same as Carte D’or. I fancied the caramel flavour .The picture on the lid suggested we were in for a treat! On opening the lid the ice cream looked very pleasing and I for one couldn’t wait to try it. The top of the ice cream was an artistic delight of swirling white ice cream with caramel sauce all liberally sprinkled with chunks of caramel fudge.

The ice cream is not too hard so it is easy to spoon out an amount. The ice cream itself is white and I was impressed with the generous amount of fudge pieces caramel sauce. The ice cream tasted truly delicious, in fact the best I have ever tasted! The taste is creamy, soft and although sweet is not overly so. The caramel fudge pieces were a taste of heaven, nice and soft and very creamy, just like fudge should be! Needless to say the litre didn’t last long!

This ice cream is not exactly good for you and a 100 g serving will give you 235 calories .It is made in France and the French know how to make decent ice cream! I would say that the Tesco brand is as good, if not better than Carte D’or. The cherry flavour was equally as good and I will be trying out the other flavours soon!

Summary: tesco own brand caramel ice cream

Yummy! As you know, we don't have a Tesco near us (we could do with a travelling one; one that comes just occasionally!) and this ice cream sounds gorgeous. I shall add it to my Tesco list for the next time we go to Inverness - but must remember to take the cool bag! Lou x
