Advantages: Creamy vanilla ice cream, Caramel
Disadvantages: Tricky lid on the container
There is such a huge variety of ice cream in our shops and supermarkets at the moment, that I felt spoilt for choice when I visited Tesco recently, looking for a tub of ice cream to put in the freezer. Tesco have introduced their own range of ice cream, which are similar in appearance to the Carte D?or style of desserts, and are presented in 1 litre flat plastic tubs. At present, Tesco offer four flavours: Chocolatino, Creamy Caramella, Cherrylicious and Vanilleta. We bought the Creamy Caramella to sample. The ice cream normally retails at £1.77 per tub, but today Tesco had an offer to buy 2 tubs for £3 ? at a price like that, I was hardly going to walk past, and not pick a couple of tubs up to bring home! Compare the price of these with a 1 litre tub of Carte D?or, which retail at £2.57, and it is evident how much cheaper these are. But will the quality be as good? The tub is rectangular in shape with rounded corners, and is fashioned from clear plastic. The packaging is plain, apart from a picture on the lid, that depicts large chunks of caramel, no doubt to give you a taster of what the ice cream within is going to taste like. The ice cream can clearly be seen through the tub, and is snowy white in colouring, with glorious sugary brown smudges of caramel swirled temptingly throughout. The lid of the tub is not easy to remove, but once extricated, the ice cream within is a joy to behold. The surface of the vanilla delight is swirled into tempting, tantalising star designs, and nestled between each swirl is a very thick layer of caramel sauce, liberally sprinkled with nuts, so unfortunately this would not be suitable for those people with nut allergies. The ice cream is similar in appearance to that of Mr. Whippy ice cream, or a Cornetto, being very white in colour, and looks as though it is going to be soft to the touch. There is a slight smell of vanilla, but the most obvious smell is that of the caramel sauce, and has a fudgy
smell, like that of a hot fudge sundae. The top of the ice cream is very soft in texture, as I expected, but as I plunge my spoon in, underneath this creaminess, is a layer of ice cream more firmer than that on the surface. The ice cream has the most wonderful creamy taste and the caramel sauce is a veritable delight of sugary sweetness, combined with the small nut pieces which are firm to the touch and crunch in the mouth. I so often find that anything caramel flavoured has an underlying taste of coffee, but I am pleased to say this does not. The whole concoction is similar to a wonderful caramel sundae, and sets my taste buds alight. However, if you do not find sweet desserts appealing, then this will not be for you, as the sauce is very sweet, and combined with the creaminess of the ice cream, can be quite sickly. A 100g serving of the ice cream will provide you with 7.4g of fat and 214 kcal, and as I could eat the whole pot, what a frightening thought this is, as this would give me a horrendous 1,170 kcals. However, I am hooked. I will not be wasting my money on the more expensive versions again, as this was absolutely wonderful, if a little sickly, after I ate so much. I am having to go back out today to buy some more as the two tubs disappeared in two days. A testament to how moreish the ice cream is. Made in the UK for Tesco Stores Limited, Cheshunt, EN8 9SL
