Advantages: good flavour and great mix of carrot, cabbage and onion

Disadvantages: a little on the pricey side if you're on a budget

I like salads, I like nice mixed salads with lots of colour and interest in them. I don't like limp lettuce and a smattering of tomato on the plate looking - well limp and to be honest particularly English (Why do we accept limpness in salad here so willingly?).

One of my favourite salad mixes is this one:

Coleslaw
Tomato
Cucumber
Orange Pepper (orange because it's nice and sweet)
Spring Onion
Sweetcorn

I take some of each of the above (chop them if needed), and mix together in a bowl. If you use a decent coleslaw you don't need additional mayonnaise - which brings me to this review...

Tesco Creamy Coleslaw comes in two tub sizes in my store, the smaller 300g tub which costs around 70p and the larger 600g tub which is the one I buy and costs £1.20

The chunks of carrot, onion and cabbage in this are a good size, not too large, and not chopped so finely you can't discern which is which. The mix is good too, some cheaper coleslaws seem to be rather cabbage heavy for my taste, and this one definitely isn't like that, it's got a good mix of all three vegetables. The dressing on this is excellent too, nice and thick and creamy, it's not too runny (again like some cheaper versions), and it's got a good rich taste to it, creamy, mayonnaise that's been seasoned well.

Really, I know I ought to make my coleslaw from scratch, but to be honest its quite a lot of faffing about to do so, and somehow it never comes out quite as nice as this coleslaw does. I've also found it doesn't last as long - I assume this may be to do with preservatives used in the store bought product, but I can't say they detract from the flavour.

If I have one complaint about this product it's the price. To be honest I doubt it's really a terrible price, it's just that when you're on a budget, keeping costs lower is important so paying £1.20 for a 600g tub of coleslaw, especially when we can easily get through two tubs in a week is a bit much, the flavour is so good however, that I do try and make sure we buy some, even if I end up doing a 50/50 split and buying one of these and one tub of tesco's value version which really isn't anything like as good, and then mixing the two together. The texture is a bit more mixed this way, but I do keep the cost down and the flavour works out quite well although the dressing is thinned a little by the cheap pot, the flavour doesn't seem to be.

Summary: A Good tasty product that's well made, lasts well, but that you do have to spend a bit more to get.
