r>I don?t know what made me do it but whilst wandering around Tesco recently, I spied some of their quiches on special offer, so decided to pick a couple up for tea that evening. Tesco do a variety of quiches, which are all displayed in the chiller cabinet, and we decided on the Cumberland Sausage Quiche, which would normally cost £1.75, but we paid £3.00 for two.

I must stress that I make a wicked quiche myself, into which is thrown a wide variety of different ingredients, but on this particular occasion I was in lazy mode so wanted something that would be quick to prepare.

The front of the box is almost completely taken up with a picture of the quiche, which looks temptingly tasty. The quiche weighs 400g and supposedly contains four servings.

It was not until I got the quiche home that I realised there was a message on the packaging stating that the quiche was cheese free. But, even without the addition of cheese, each 3 ½ oz portion of quiche will provide you with 237 kcal and 15.2g of fat. I imagine that this is due to the milk contained in the product.

On opening the box, the quiche is packed in a foil container. The short crust pastry is fluted and is a pleasant beige colour, and the quiche filling is a pleasant mottled brown and yellow hue. There are a few slices of sausage dotted on the surface, on which herbs can plainly be seen. The sausages are not sliced lengthways, but into small circles. Also long slices of onion were visible in the quiche. The sausages are pale in colour, and I would have preferred to see them a bit browned, but not everyone likes cremated meat. However, these did look a little undercooked to me.

The only smell apparent is that of the herbs in the Cumberland sausage, which smell gorgeous, and a slight eggy smell from the filling.

The quiche can be served either warm or cold. We decided to warm ours by placing in the oven at Gas Mark 6 for 25 minutes. It was then that the aroma of
sage was much more evident.

Surprisingly enough, this was quite pleasant. The pastry was light and crumbly, and tasted quite buttery, although one minor grievance was that it had a slightly sweet taste, which was a little offputting. But the pastry was coked to perfection, and positively melted in the mouth. The filling was not predominantly egg, as so many of these quiches normally are and the egg that it did contain was light, fluffy and creamy, although the surface had a slighter drier texture. The small slices of sausage were tasty and the sage was evident when eating. The onions also added some flavour, but I would have preferred them to have not been sliced so long. Because the sausages were herby, this added to the flavour, and probably made me enjoy it more than a normal store bought quiche, as I do tend to find them very bland.

Overall this was a tasty quiche and I would buy it again in an emergency. The children also liked it, and my son normally detests Cumberland sausages, so I can confidently say success all round. I would definitely buy these again for picnics or for eating with a salad on a hot day if we have been out and there has not been time to cook.

I am going to take one star away as I would have preferred there to be cheese and also the portions were small. My partner, in all honesty, could have eaten the whole quiche on his own, and I would estimate that three portions would be the average from this, but only two if your family are hearty eaters.
