Advantages: nearly as good as home made, price
Disadvantages: not as good as home made
I usually make my own mince pies, but this year I thought I would take the easy way out and buy some so I trialled Tesco deep filled mince pies. They cost 99p per 6 pack, these mince pies are on offer at the moment 2 for the price of 1 that is 17p per pie if you buy 1 pkt 8.5p per mince pie if you get the free one.
I trialled some of these the other day and decided they were good enough for our Christmas. The sell by/use by date is the first week of January if you buy them now.
Packaging
The mince pies come in a red packet and the six pies in their foil case sit in a red plastic tray.
Looks
Taking one out I can see it is a deep pie and that the pastry lid has a pastry star on it. The colour is good a light brown. It does look quite attractive.
Preparation, Presentation
You can eat these pies cold; I ate the first one straight out of the packet. For Christmas I shall arrange them attractively on a cake plate; my plate is a pretty old one. You could put a paper doyley on a plain plate and the pies on top of this if you wanted to if you.
These pies are really nice served warm, just heat them for a few seconds in the microwave (taking them out of the foil case first of course), or heat them in the oven for a few minutes. Heating them makes them fresher and moister (provided you do not leave them in too long)
If you wish to you could serve these with cream or with brandy butter. You could serve them as a desert with some custard too
Texture/Taste
Taking my first bite the texture of the pastry is good I do not get crumbs everywhere, but the pastry is not so solid you need strong teeth to bite through it. The pastry is a good short crust pastry. There is quite a bit of filling in the pie it is not a nearly empty pastry case. The filling is moist and fruity slightly spicy flavour but not too spicy so this would not put fussy children off. It is a pleasant flavour. I have had better but I have also had a lot worse. I will not be ashamed to serve these instead of my own baked ones.
The size of these pies is adequate that you could need only eat one , but you need not worry after the initial taste test I purchased more so there is 2 or 3 for all my guests.(unless I eat them all before Christmas.)
I also trailed Morrison's deep filled mince pies. I shall write my review on them next.
Enjoy your mince pies have a great Christmas Mary
