Advantages: Tasty, Affordable, Top Flavour
Disadvantages: Crumbly, Could Be Slightly Cheaper
Tesco Double Chocolate Mini Muffins are fairly affordable at £1.41 for a box of 12 little muffins. That works out at 12p each. There are certainly cheaper alternatives available, but I think that the price is fair for the quality you get from these muffins.
Each little muffin comes in it's own peel-back paper cake case. In true cake case fashion, peeling this off means a trail of crumbs will inevitably go flying all about the place! I would recommend opening up these babies over a piece of kitchin towel though to avoid a mess all over your carpet.
When you bite into one of these, the first thing to be aware of is that they tend to flake and crumble slightly, the same as they do when you take the case of. So do have your kitchen towel or cupped hand at the ready. The flimsy texture is well worth it though for the taste that comes with it.
These are really moist little things, with a really pleasant texture to them. They tend to fall apart in your mouth a bit, giving you a nice texture of a mixture of chunky crumbs, mixed with lots of little milk chocolate chunks. I like that these have a slightly airy and rather light texture to them, because if they were overly thick then I think the rich chocolate flavour would be too overwhelming.
The chocolate chunks are really nice quality, with a sweet and rich flavour to them. I was very impressed when I first had these, as Tesco chocolate isn't always the best quality going. But the stuff they've used in these muffins is really very tasty. The chocolate is so dark it could almost pass as dark chocolate, but there's a creamy little edge to it that says otherwise.
All in all, these are really decent little things. They're relatively affordable, very moist and light, with a rich chocolate flavour and good quality ingredients. These are great little sizes for kids to have, and each muffin has 115 calories, along with 6.7g of fat and 8.3g of sugar. Not the healthiest things going, but not overly offensive as far as cakes go.
Summary: Highly Recommended
