Advantages: A kit which offers a quick, easy and tasty meal.

Disadvantages: Probably expensive for those who can cook it all from scratch.

TESCO FAJITA KIT

I am not the most adventurous cook, pretty standard and boring really. Every time I try something new, for example a chinese stir fry, it is never as nice as the take away and I fell disappointed. Having said this, at the moment I am fed up with cooking the same thing, so I asked my daughter what she would like for a change. She said she had chicken fajitas at school last week and it was really good, so I decided to give this a spin.

***What is the kit like?***

I am sure with a bit of research I could have put this together with bare ingredients, but I thought there was less chance of it going wrong if I bought it all in one place. So I went to my local Tesco's and bought this kit. It contained 8 tortillas, a sachet of spice and a packet of salsa dip. There were full instructions on the back and a suggested recipe.

I bought extra ingredients of peppers, chicken and onion separately. As this was only for myself and my daughter I managed to make this meal stretch to two nights. It would easily be enough for a family of four.

The cooking process was really quick, I warmed the flour tortillas in the oven for only 10 minutes and fried the seasoned chicken in oil for around 5 minutes. I then added the other ingredients and cooked for a further 3 minutes or so.

I served it up with a green salad, some grated cheese and spicy potato wedges that my daughter had learned how to make at school.

***Taste test***

Well, I was really impressed. In the packet the flour tortillas appeared tough and hard, but after they had been warmed they were soft and fluffy. The chicken was nicely spiced, but not too hot. With the peppers and onions added, this was a really filling meal - I couldn't eat both tortillas as the salad and wedges filled me up.

In fact the spicy taste was as good as any I have tasted when eating out. I felt like a really accomplished cook and my daughter asked if we could have it the next night - which we did!

The tomato salsa was a little too tangy for me - but it didn't take away my overall enjoyment of the meal.

***Overall opinion***

I was really pleased with the results and I will be buying again. In fact, I may experiment and buy some other items from the same range - tacos etc. I don't think I will bother with the branded version as the Tesco version was more than good enough.

I appreciate that many people will buy all the items separately, but I am happy to pay a few pennies more, in the knowledge that I can be sure it will taste great. The cooking instructions were clear and easy to follow and the photographs on the back, were also useful. The front of the packaging is also clear in terms of what is included and what you need to buy yourself additionally.

One eight of a pack contains 125 calories, 2g of fat (1.1g saturated), which doesn't seem too bad. Having said this, I am not 100% sure that this includes the chicken or just the ingredients of the pack. I think it is for everything as the protein content is listed too. Perhaps someone will come along who knows this.

***Availability***

Only from Tesco of course for £1.99 at current website prices, although I am sure that I only paid £1.84 at the week-end. Recommended.

Summary: A nice quick easy meal, that is filling and offers an alternative to 'roast chicken'!

I prefer the spice in this kit to that of Old El Paso it's just that the tortillas are pretty awful! Good review.
