Advantages: Delicious, wonderful caramel and shortbread
Disadvantages: Very, very sweet
Last week Tesco sent me a voucher for 1000 extra Clubcard points if I spent £6.50 on items from the Finest range. While I'm not an avid collector of points I realised straight away that this was quite a bargain, especially as I'm a regular buyer of this range anyway.
These Caramel Shortbread Squares are absolutely delicious. I've had them before but it's one of those sweet products that I have to make sure I have visitors as they are so sugary that they certainly won't do my blood sugar any favours, so I have to share them to avoid me eating them all myself!
They are a very simple idea and is basically Millionaire's Shortbread which has been made with top quality ingredients rather than the standard biscuit, caramel and chocolate. Well, it's still made up of those three components but they are absolutely delicious and far better than other biscuits of this type I've eaten before.
The shortbreads are a little larger than my other favourite from Thorntons but are still gone in just two bites - and that's not just me being greedy, they really are very small indeed! The shortbread itself is deliciously buttery and crumbly, it has a slightly treacle flavour which is a wonderfully different to the bland shortbread you usually find in this type of sweet treat.
The caramel is delicious. In my mind it's a kind of cross between the sweet and sticky caramel found in Cadbury's bars and the glorious stretchy toffee I buy from Thorntons when my teeth are feeling particularly strong! It has a sweet flavour and is soft and glossy, completely infusing the shortbread with its very pleasant golden flavour. It sounds strange describing a flavour as 'golden', but this is really a good word for it as it tastes so very smooth and sweet!
The chocolate is apparently Belgian, and very nice it is too. It's in a very thin layer compared to the much thicker caramel but is delightfully rich and rounds off the wonderful sweet flavours of the Shortbread Squares beautifully. It's creamy and not as sweet as most chocolate toppings on this kind of biscuit, but in my opinion that's good news as they really are sweet enough without a thick layer of chocolate.
Overall I think these are wonderful, absolutely delicious. They become sickly rather fast so I can rarely eat more than two, and my limit is usually one simply because of the aforementioned blood sugar problems! It's strange though as they are sickly sweet but are extremely moreish so even though I sometimes feel as though I can't quite manage to finish my second one I'll still munch it up and ignore the growing protestations of my stomach!
These five small Caramel Shortbread Squares cost £1.59 a packet, which is expensive I suppose but for such a tasty and luxurious treat I don't think that is too bad a price.
Summary: A delicious sweet treat from the Finest range.
