Advantages: Delicious flavour, crunchy and thick crisps, cheaper than Sensations
Disadvantages: ----------
When I went to visit my younger daughter at the weekend we decided to nip to Tesco and buy a few bits and pieces for a BBQ, as usual we bought far more than we needed and ended up branching out from the BBQ idea and having nibbles too. I was looking for Sensations crisps but there were no flavours we fancied so I ended up buying a large bag of Tesco Finest crisps.
The flavour we opted for in the end was Honey Roast Ham and they were absolutely delicious, I am usually a Walkers or McCoys person so wasn't sure how a supermarket brand would fare but I'm so glad I bought them as they are sure to become a firm favourite.
For a start the crisps are quite small, this is a definite plus point as far as I am concerned as I hate overly large crisps and just cannot eat them properly as they make the sides of my mouth sore, especially salty flavours.
Then there is the texture of these crisps which is absolutely wonderful. Tesco have obviously tried the emulate the crunchy texture of Kettle crisps, these are very substantial crisps that have the crunch factor rather than just being crispy.
Each crisp is liberally coated with the honey roast ham flavouring and the flavour deeply infuses every crisp so that even if, like me, you suck off the flavouring before chewing the crisps you'll still get a good hit of flavour from the bare crisp.
These crisps taste delicious; the ham flavour is there as I had expected and it's a rich ham flavouring which is more like gammon than a pre-cooked ham taste. The honey roast part comes through as a sweet taste of pure honey, which may sound awful in crisp form but believe me it's wonderful even though I would ordinarily baulk at any crisps that had a sweet flavour as, let's face it, it's not natural!
These crisps are rather sweet in flavour but this is offset by the delicious meaty ham flavour, I was surprised that I could taste the honey in its own right but the flavour is definitely there and rather stronger than I would have imagined possible while still creating an enjoyable and totally non-gimmicky crisp flavour.
I paid £1.03 for this large bag which served four of us adults, I can't remember the exact size of the bag but I'd say it was only very slightly smaller than a packet of Sensations which can cost in excess of £1.70 depending on where you purchase them.
Summary: Honey roast ham crisps where you really can taste both the honey and the ham!
