This in my opinion is a rather special pizza, good enough to be gourmet. I first tried this Pizza about six months ago, and I have to tell you that it is one of the best pre-packed pizzas available. The Tesco Finest Margherita Pizza retails for around £3.79. The Tesco Finest brand name is made up of products which are exactly that, and this pizza is no exception. The Pizza is around 12” in diameter and weighs 415g. Tesco suggest it would serve two. I am thankful for that, because if they said it should serve four, I expect it would only serve two in our house! This way, I don’t feel so bad. It isn’t too-oo bad in calories either; it contains 442 calories and 5.2 g of fat in a 207g serving. So why do you think it is so good? ----------------------------------------- It is quite simply to die for. The pizza is simple, classy and in my opinion exactly what a pizza should be like. Pre-cooked, the pizza has about eight to ten generous slices of buffalo mozzarella, together with some slices of tomato. It is garnished with basil and cracked black pepper. The bread base is thin, and spread with a fine tomato paste. The pizza takes eight to ten minutes to cook. As it cooks, the smell of basil and warm bread wafted through the kitchen, and I could have been anywhere in Sorrento! The taste test --------------- As you bite into the pizza the first tastes you get are the sliced tomatoes in the centre, which are fruity and as there are not that many, they are not overpowering. The buffalo mozzarella is really tasty, and the tomato paste and base just finish off the taste experience. The base is very authentic, the entire pizza is hand crafted, in fact, and the base is just the right thickness and slightly floury around the edges. I find the portion size about right for this pizza, in particular because it is not too heavy, like some of the cheaper pizzas are, that are usually
loaded with topping. It goes down well with a nice glass of chilled white wine or a cool beer. Unfortunately tonight I am only having a coke! The pizza is suitable for freezing, and should not be microwaved (who would microwave it anyway, that would be sacrilege). It has a short shelf life, of a few days typically. I have often found that when we have gone into Tesco’s there is an empty space where this pizza should be in their fridges, so it must be pretty popular, but fortunately we were lucky tonight!

a-true-ben - 23/12/01 Like Jill says, a good opinion. I'm afraid my U reflects the fact that it doesn't really fit the category - if it does end up moved to somewhere more appropriate just let me know and I'll re-rate. Ben |
