Advantages: err read the review!
Disadvantages: Not always better, Certainly not cheaper!
Tesco Finest I am a budget shopper. That does not mean I buy the economy brands, but it does mean that I take care of the pennies with the intention of being able to treat the family once in a while. Which is where Tesco Finest comes in. For those of you who shop in Tesco, you will have seen the impressively packaged silver wrappings of the Finest range, with an equally impressive price tag attached! The range looks good on the shelf and is not cheap. So, how good is it? Well, the range itself covers many basic foods. Hams, sausages, pizzas, ready meals and more. It is pitched at the end of the market with the money. Singles with no bills or those who simply have a disposable income that is too high! The items I have encountered are mixed. The sausages had a high meat contents (over 80%) and were excellent in taste. At £1.49 for 6, they were also competitively priced. The pizza range is quite wide in the larger stores. The meat packed pizza my family tucked in to cost £2.99, which was on the high side, and, to be honest, the taste was nothing to write home about. Personally, I prefer Asda self select large deep pan pizza at £2.49. A very expensive chicken fillet ready meal in mustard sauce cost £3.99 and was very average. Somerfield have an identical product that is absolutely marvellous with far nicer taste. Better quality hams and other meats can be found at the Tesco deli, so avoid the packeted stuff and head for the deli. Prices are similar, but deli quality is better to the Finest range! The yule log which the family wolfed down today cost £1.99 and was excellent. If I am to criticise, it was a tad rich. But, I suppose, that is the point. While I am not glowing with overwhelming recommendation, for the main part the Tesco Finest range is low in salts and sugars and additives compared to the cheaper alternative mortals like me would normally buy.
> I am not, however, convinced that paying more than a little bit extra gives me the gain in quality that paying the extra money deserves. An occasional trips to M&S food departments is still justified! More information from Tesco.com and holders of the Tesco Finest Platinum credit card can have 0% interest for 6 months and get money off vouchers for specific items in the Finest range. Not that they have ever been for a specific item I want to buy!

- 27/12/02 I shop in Tesco for most of my shoppingand have obviously seen the Finest range. I've only bought Finest wine, cos I have had vouchers with money off them. I can't find anything wrong with Tesco's own label non-Finest stuff to be honest. |
