Tesco Finest Thai Fishcakes with Sweet Chilli Dip |

Advantages: There are big pieces of prawn and crab, the fishcakes are filling and they taste lovely
Disadvantages: The sweet chilli dip is not very nice in my opinion
My daughter went shopping to Tesco today and when she finally came back to collect the children she softened me up by giving me a box of Thai fishcakes from the Tesco Finest range.
They are chilled fishcakes and look very posh because Tesco have made the box look very modern and it has a photograph of a succulent looking fishcake and a close up of a pile of chilli's to tell me that it is an Oriental dish. Fishcakes are one of my favourite foods and I do not mind if they are handmade speciality fishcakes or 99p Iceland ones.
They come in a plastic tray and are well separated from one another with the little plastic tub of sweet chilli dip at one end of the tray. I was disappointed that they are so small but when I picked it up I realised it is a tall narrow fishcake instead of the flat round ones I am used to. I baked it at gas mark 7 for about 15 minutes on a baking tray, warmed the dip for a few seconds in my microwave and settled down in the peace and quiet when they had all gone home.
They smell very nice but not very fishy and that is a shame because I like smoked haddock fishcakes and they smell exactly of smoked haddock but I would not have known this was fish by the smell. They look nice as well and have browned to a lovely colour in the oven. I like that they have browned all over because I thought the sides might have been a little bit pale because they were so tall.
When I cut into one with a sharp knife I was surprised at how much filling there is and it is tightly packed inside the batter case. I cannot wait to eat my first mouthful because it looks so tasty. The filling is potato, shredded white crab meat and prawns and they are more luxurious than I thought I would find from a supermarket. There is a lot of crabmeat used and I could see small pieces of it as well as lots of shredded crab and there were lots of chunks of prawns.
They taste divine, they are honestly lovely and as good as any homemade fishcake but in a different way. These are too good to be homemade if that makes sense and they look too perfect as well but they feel like a treat tonight watching my CSI DVD with a glass of wine. These Thai fishcakes taste moist and are very rich in texture. The outside batter is crisp and light and it is the perfect case for the filling because I think if the batter was any heavier it would drown out the flavour of the crabmeat and prawns. The fish filling is very delicate but tastes nice and fresh and it is well spiced to make it authentic Thai flavour. I can taste a lot of spices and they all mix well to give a nice warm flavour that does not drown out the taste of the good quality fish. There are little flakes of chilli in the filling and this gives the fishcakes a nice punch. The potato is very finely mashed and they taste very fluffy inside.
I cut it into wedges to make sure I got plenty of filling and also a fair piece of batter. The batter holds the filling together and I did not get covered in crumbs of crabmeat which was a relief because I usually drop lots on myself.
The sweet chilli dip is not so good and was watery and too spicy but with no substance. It did not taste of sweet chilli very much, I usually buy my sweet chilli dip from the Chinese supermarket and this one was a poor substitute. I got myself a dollop of mayonnaise and this was lovely with the fishcakes because it cooled down some of the spiciness and the creaminess of the mayo was a nice contrast to the crisp of the fishcake batter.
I have just phoned my daughter and she said they cost £3. 49 which I think is good value because you get 4 good sized filling fishcakes that go lovely with jacket potato and salad like I had tonight. I think I will have some with chips tomorrow and make a nice parsley sauce to go with them.
Summary: If you want more luxury fishcakes then try these for a nice change.
